Women's Soccer Draws with Ursinus in Home Opener

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Upon its return from a successful weekend in New Jersey, Eastern Women's Soccer opened the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday afternoon against the Ursinus College Bears. Graduate forward Ella Marrollo scored her first goal in an Eastern uniform, and the first Eastern goal against Ursinus since 2015, but an equalizer 11 minutes later off a corner kick resulted in the Eagles' second straight 1-1 draw. Faith Leake put together another strong performance in goal, making nine saves in her first full match of the season.

After a first half that saw both teams spending of their time in the midfield, Eastern began to press its attack. The consistent pressure led to Eastern's only goal in the 62nd minute. In the box, Marrollo booted the ball away from Ursinus keeper Alyssa Marrafiino, and it sailed into the upper left corner of the net, putting the Eagles ahead 1-0. It was the first goal scored against Ursinus by an Eastern player since Emily Cole and Hannah Bomberger combined for four scores in a 4-2 win back on October 27, 2015.

Shortly after the tally, Leake made several key stop including a huge sliding save on a point blank chance by Ursinus' Kayla Harvey. Harvey beat the Eastern defense and had an one-on-one chance, but Leake, as she showcased much of her Rookie of the Year season, calmly kicked the ball out of harm's way to keep the Eastern lead intact.

Ursinus, however, was able to find the equalizer in the 73rd minute. On their fifth corner of the match, Paige Flaugh gathered the ball out of a scramble in front of the net and pushed a shot past Leake to tie the game at 1-1.

Both teams had their chances in the final 18 minutes to find the game-winning goal, but neither could find twine. Olivia Nicholson had the best chance for Eastern on a free kick in the 89th minute, but sailed her shot just high above the net.

Eastern's young squad performed well throughout the afternoon, particularly first-year forward Billinda Leisner. The Hatfield native controlled play on both ends of the pitch, and played great defense in the midfield to help spring several Eastern scoring chances.

Eastern (1-0-2) hits the road on Saturday for a MAC showdown against the Delaware Valley Aggies. The contest is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
