Football Tops Albright for First Win of 2024

READING, Pa. - Eastern Football trailied 10-7 after the first quarter of play and 17-14 early in the second quarter, but the Eagles went on to outscore Albright 27-3 the rest of the way en route to a 41-20 road win on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The Eastern defense allowed just three points in the second half and forced a game-changing turnover on downs late in the first half, while the Eastern rushing attack produced 201 yards and four touchdowns in its first win of the 2024 season.

Eastern briefly took a 14-10 lead early in the second quarter after a Jamauri James pick deep in Albright territory and a subsequent 15-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back Jeremiah Avrilien, his first of two touchdowns on the day. The Lions, however, needed just two plays to regain the advantage, which included a 78-yard touchdown pass from Chase Roberts to Alden Stickler.

The Eagles, however, responded, using an eight-play, 74-yard drive, with the help of a roughing the kicker penalty, to take a lead they would not relinquish. Nabb picked up 30 yards on a crucial 4th-and-2 from the Albright 43-yard line, and Avrilien capped off the possession with a 13-yard touchdown run to put the Eagles ahead 21-17.

Over the span of the following seven minutes, Albright drove the length of the field, making it all the way to the Eastern red zone. The Eagles' defense stiffened as James broke up a 4th-and-1 pass in the end zone to keep the Lions off the scoreboard and keep the Eastern lead intact.

The Eagles added to their advantage on their first drive of the second quarter after the defense forced another turnover on downs. Nabb rushed for 16 yards on the first two plays, before completing a 40-yard pass to Nassik Smith down to the Albright 25. On the next play, Nabb found junior wide receiver Izayah-Guy Bruton for a 25-yard touchdown pass to make it a 28-17 lead after a John Nolek PAT. It is the second week in a row that Guy-Bruton recorded a touchdown reception.

The Lions were able to score a field goal early in the fourth quarter, but they would not get any closer the rest of the way. Eastern added some insurance with a pair of touchdowns on its final two drives - a five-yard run from first-year running back Curtis Johnson and a Nabb 16-yard touchdown run. Johnson, who recently converted from linebacker to running back, scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Nabb on Eastern's first quarter scoring drive.

Nabb completed six of his nine passing attempt for 100 yards to go along with a pair of touchdown passes and a touchdown run. After four games, Nabb is the Eagles' leading passer with 432 yards and four touchdowns and leading rusher with 300 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson finished the day with 72 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, while Avrilien played his best game of the season with nine carries for 66 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Defensively, Dre Beckford and Gashawn Moody led the Eagles with six tackle apiece, while James and Logan McGowan each recorded a takeaway.

The Eagles will be on their bye week next Saturday before returning to Radnor for a matchup with King's College on Oct. 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 noon.
