CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - In its final non-conference doubleheader of the season on Wednesday, Eastern Softball suffered a pair of rare losses, falling to the Bulldogs 1-0 and 7-2 in a battle of top teams at McGettigan Park. The Eagles were no-hit by DeSales ace Rachel Lowry in the opener, before giving up the final seven runs in their five-run loss in the nightcap.
DeSales' (23-10) lone run came in the second inning. After Bulldogs' third baseman Paige Hromin earned a walk after a 15-pitch at-bat, she later scored on a Kiara Castera RBI single.
Mackenzie Laub and
Susana Perez were the only two Eagles to reach base, both via the walk.
Despite losing just the second game of her young career,
Danika Barthol finished the contest with four strikeouts, surpassing the 100 strikeout mark. She becomes the first Eastern pitcher to reach 100 strikeouts since Janelle Fair accomplished the feat in both 2012 and 2013. Furthermore, Barthol needs just six more strikeouts to pass Deb Ellerson for the third most strikeouts in a single season in program history.
Eastern finished with seven hits in game two and scored the game's first two runs.
Dakota Owen scored
Kellie O'Brien with an RBI single in the fourth inning, and
Jania Long followed with an RBI single to left field, plating
Kenzie McClune. However, the Bulldogs tied the game in their half of the fourth, before tacking on five runs in the sixth to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Eastern (25-6) returns home on Saturday for its final conference doubleheader of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. The Eagles need just one more win to clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
