CHESTERTOWN, Md. - In another slugfest on Wednesday night, Eastern Baseball put together another furious comeback effort against Washington College, rallying from 10-0 and 14-7 deficits to tie the contest at 14-14 in the top of the ninth inning. However, the rally came up one run short as the Shoremen walked it off in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 15-14 triumph.
Resting most of their regular starters, the Eagles' offense operated at an efficient level with 14 hits, including seven doubles, and 12 runs batted in. Sophomore catcher
Gabe Weir led the Eagles with three hits in five at-bats to go along with a pair of runs scored and three RBIs. Seniors
Logan Klember and
Sean Cottrell each finished with a pair of knocks, and eight other Eagles finished with one hit.
"The lineup battled until the very end," Eastern Head Coach
Scott Renauro said. "Gabe stepped up at the plate and put good at-bats together. We had runners on in almost every inning and scored in seven of the nine innings we played."
Washington College (4-13) took control of the contest early, scoring one run in the bottom of the second and nine runs in the bottom of the third to go up 10-0, but Weir got the rally started in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, the Andover, N.J. native doubled down the right field line to score
David Hunsberger and
Brian Lang to cut the Shoremen lead to eight. Cottrell later scored on a fielding error to make it 10-3.
Weir recorded his third RBI of the day in the fifth on an single through the left side, and in the sixth, senior
Ryan Turzani doubled to right center to score
Trent Macdougall and cut the Washington College lead to five.
The Shoremen scored four runs in the sixth to increase their advantage back to nine, but the Eagles kept poking away. Turzani drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh, and Lang scored on a bases-loaded balk in the eighth to trim the advantage to 14-7.
With two outs in the ninth, the Eagles exploded for seven runs on five hits, tying the contest at 14-14. Hunsberger hit a double down the right field for Eastern's first run, before junior
Luca Marinucci followed with a pinch hit, two-run single to left center, scoring Hunsberger and Lang to cut the lead to 14-10.
Trevor Harris and
Leyton Bamesberger completed the improbable comeback with back-to-back two-run doubles to send the game to the bottom of the ninth.
The Shoremen, however, held, walking it off with a one-out, RBI double to center field.
"This team continues to battle," Renauro said. "It doesn't matter what the scenario is, the guys stay locked in until the end."
Eastern returns to conference action tomorrow with a single, nine-inning contest at York. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
