Softball Rolls Past Widener in Doubleheader Sweep

CHESTER, Pa. - In its first conference doubleheader of the season on Saturday, Eastern Softball dominated Widener in pair of shutout victories. Danika Barthol pitched another complete game masterpiece, striking out 13 in a 6-0 win in game one, before the Eastern offense exploded for 13 runs in the first inning in an eventual 14-0, run-rule triumph in game two.

Barthol (4-1) earned her third win of the week in another brilliant performance in the circle. The first-year pitcher from Emmaus allowed just five baserunners in her fourth complete game, striking out a career-high 13 batters. In 34 innings of work, Barthol has allowed just 12 hits, one earned run, and seven walks while striking out 36 batters. Opposing players are hitting just .103 against her this season, and she currently boasts a 0.21 ERA.

After a scoreless first inning, Eastern struck for four runs in the top of the second. After a Sydney Ostolaza single to left field, first-year catcher Dakota Owen hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. Fellow first-year Ainsley O'Donnell followed with an RBI single to left field, before Kelci Cost added another run on a successful double steal. O'Donnell capped off the scoring on a Widener fielding error to increase the Eastern lead to 4-0.

Eastern scored two more runs in the top of the fourth. O'Donnell drove in her second run of the contest on a single to center field, and Mackenzie Laub followed with an RBI single of her own to left to push the Eastern advantage to 6-0. Barthol did the rest, retiring the Pride in order in each of the last five innings to secure the win. O'Donnell finished 3-for-4 from the dish with a run scored and two RBIs, while Ostolaza went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Eagles wasted no time in game two, scoring 13 runs on eight hits and three Widener errors to take control of the contest early. All 13 of their runs came with two outs in the inning. Tori Hook began the scoring with an RBI single to center field, and Sophie Rollins followed with a two-run double to right field to make it 3-0 Eastern. A Maeve Colligan two-run single, a fielding error by the Widener infield, and a bases-loaded walk to Dakota Owen pushed the lead to 7-0, before a Hook three-run double and a Jania Long three-run blast put the Eagles ahead 13-0. Alyssa Binczak scored Eastern's 14th run with an RBI double to left field in the second inning.

The combo of Long (4-0) and Bryn Clifford pitched a five-inning shutout, allowing just four total baserunners while striking out three. Long is now tied for the team lead in wins with four, together with Barthol. Binczak and Hook each finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and combined for six RBIs.

Eastern (11-2, 2-0) will be back in action on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Rosemont. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm at The Softball Field.
