Softball Tops Rosemont for Second Straight Shutout Sweep

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - On a brisk evening at the EU Softball Field, Eastern Softball increased its win streak to nine games with a pair of 7-0 victories over the Rosemont College Ravens on Tuesday. Since their last loss on the last day of February, the Eagles are undefeated in the month of March, with their last four wins coming via shutout.

Offensively, the Eagles combined for 18 hits in the two wins. In the circle, the foursome of Danika Barthol, Bryn Clifford, Jania Long, and Regina Bangcoro combined for 17 strikeouts and just five hits allowed in 13 innings of work.

Fresh off her second MAC Commonwealth Pitcher-of-the-Week selection, Barthol (5-1) earned her fifth win of the season in another outstanding performance in game one. The Emmaus native pitched four shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out eight. Barthol now boasts a 0.18 ERA and leads the team with 44 strikeouts in 38 innings of work. Clifford earned her second save of the year in relief, pitching the final three frames with four punchouts and just one hit allowed.

Eastern struck early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. First-year outfielder Ainsley O'Donnell led off the game with a single to right field and advanced to second on a wild pitch, before Alyssa Binczak stayed red hot at the plate with an RBI single through the left side to score O'Donnell and put the Eagles ahead 1-0. Later in the inning, Long punched an RBI single through the middle to plate Mackenzie Laub and double the Eastern lead.

The Eagles added to their advantage with three runs in the third. Susana Perez hit a bloop single to center field to score Kellie O'Brien, and Kelci Cost followed with an RBI single to right field to plate Rachel Thomas. Perez also scored on the hit following a subsequent Rosemont fielding error.

Two more runs came home in the fourth on a Tori Hook RBI double to right center and a Sydney Ostolaza RBI single. Clifford held down the fort the rest of the way, allowing just three baserunners in the final three innings. Hook finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and six other Eagles finished with a hit a run batted in.

The Eastern offense kept on humming in the nightcap, scoring at least one run in four of the game's six innings. Binczak hit a one-out single in the first and reached second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Long came through again, helping her own cause with an RBI single to left field.

The Eagles increased their lead to 3-0 in the second inning. After Sophie Rollins reached base after being hit by a pitch, Kacie Noonan singled to right field, and Sophia Vento walked, O'Donnell roped a two-run single through the Rosemont infield, scoring Rollins and Noonan. Noonan had an RBI single of her own in the fourth, scoring Laub to make it 4-0 Eastern.

Eastern put the game away in the fourth with a three-run frame. O'Donnell and Binczak recorded back-to-back singles to begin the inning, before Long recorded a base hit to load the bags. Dakota Owen scored pinch runner Olivia Mattioli on an RBI fielders choice, before Maeve Colligan crushed a two-run double off the right field wall to score Owen and Long and increase the Eastern advantage to 7-0.

Long (5-0) and Bangcoro did the rest, striking out five and allowing just three hits combined. Long remained undefeated, winning her fifth game of the season with a scoreless four innings. Bangcoro tossed a scoreless fifth and sixth frames before the game was called due to darkness.

O'Donnell, Binczak, Long, and Noonan each finished with two hits in the victory, while combining for three runs scored and four RBI. Colligan went 1-for-3 with a double and pair of runs driven in.

Eastern (13-2, 2-0) will return to conference play, weather permitting, this coming Saturday at York. First pitch against the Spartans is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
