ABINGTON, Pa. - In its spring opener on Wednesday afternoon, Eastern Women's Tennis recorded its third win with a 6-3 victory over Penn State Abington. The Eagles won two doubles matches and four of the six singles matches to being the spring season on a high note.
In doubles play, senior
Mercedes Lohmann and first-year
Grace Schriever picked up the first win at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. Junior
Trinity Gruber and sophomore
Anisah Smith earned the Eagles' second win with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
First-year
Kiley McHugh recorded the Eagles' first win in singles play, cruising past Abbey Anderson 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Sophomore
Rhyan Metzger had an equally impressive outing at No. 2 singles, recording her third singles win, 6-1, 6-1. Fellow sophomore
Sarah Mower earned a tiebreaker win at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 6-0, 10-6, before Smith earned her second win of the day at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-4 over Taylor LaPage.
"It was a great team effort," Eastern Head Coach
Harrison Bitzberger said. "Everyone fought for every point today and had great attitudes throughout the entire match. All of our hard work in practice really showed through today."
Eastern Women's Tennis will be back in action for its spring home opener at the Eastern Tennis Courts this coming Saturday against Lancaster Bible. First serve is scheduled for 11:00 am.
