RADNOR, Pa. - In the final meeting between the two Eagle Road rivals on Sunday afternoon at Cabrini-Carroll Field, Eastern Baseball rallied from a four-run, sixth inning deficit to beat the Cabrini Cavaliers 9-5. Trailing 4-0 heading into the seventh inning, the Eagles scored five runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth to secure their sixth win of the young season.
In the first six innings, the Eagles recorded just one hit - a double from senior outfielder
Garrett Friend. In the final three, the Eagles' offense exploded for six hits and nine runs, while taking advantage of three Cabrini walks and two fielding errors. First-year third baseman
Robert Del Buono remained red-hot at the plate with two hits in five at-bats to go along with a pair of runs scored. Sophomore
Justin DiCesare also continued his recent hot streak, finishing 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Friend, fresh off his four-hit day yesterday, also went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Senior catcher
Griffin Falco recorded Eastern's seventh hit and drove in a pair of runs.
First-year southpaw
Dylan Labukas (1-0) earned his first collegiate win on Sunday, allowing just two hits and five total baserunners while striking out four on 57 pitches. Labukas, together with
Gavin Mikulski and
John Westfield, combined for 12 punchouts.
The Eagles have made a habit of late-game comebacks over the last three years, winning four games where they trailed by three or more runs with late-inning rallies. On April 22, 2022, Eastern rallied from seven runs down with an eight-run ninth to beat Hood 13-12. Last season against Rosemont, the Eagles roared back from a seven-run first inning deficit back to beat the Ravens 11-9. Before today, on its Spring Break trip, Eastern came back from a three-run deficit with a seven run ninth to beat John Jay 9-4.
Cabrini (6-3) struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the first on doubles from Jaden Dickerson and RJ Dipper. Dustin Sutton added another run on a sacrifice fly, before Dipper drove in his third run on a single in the sixth.
After that, the Eagles took control. Del Buono began the rally with a double to left field, before
Evan Barks reached after being hit by a pitch. DiCesare followed with a double to center field, plating Barks to put the Eagles on the board. Friend and Falco followed with RBI singles to cut the Cabrini lead to one, before Friend scored on a fielding error to tie the game at 4-4. With one out,
Logan Klember collected a pinch sacrifice fly to left field to score Falco and put the Eagles ahead.
The Cavaliers answered with a run in the home half of the seventh, but the Eagles took the lead for good in the eighth. Del Buono and Barks again began the rally with a single and reaching on a Cabrini error, respectively, before DiCesare roped a single to left field. Eastern showed discipline at the plate for the remainder of the evening, scoring three runs on three bases-loaded walks, before junior
Brian Lang scored Falco on an RBI fielders choice for the Eagles' final run. Labukas shut the door the rest of the way, allowing just two Cabrini baserunners in the final two frames.
Eastern (6-4), after 10 games away, will return to The Yard for its home opener on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
