MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - On an overcast Tuesday at the Ripken Experience, Eastern Baseball failed to get much offense going in a 7-1 loss to Hanover College. The Eagles, after recording nine hits against Cabrini on Monday, struck out 15 times and were no-hit through 5.1 innings against the Panthers. Six runs scored by Hanover in the first four innings proved to be all that was needed.
The Eagles had a chance to strike first, as
Evan Barks reached base on an error and stole second with one out, but the Panthers recorded back-to-back punch outs to end the Eastern scoring threat. Hanover (2-2) capitalized on their chances in the top of the second inning, scoring two on an RBI fielders choice from Robert Caroll to grab a lead they would not relinquish. The Panthers added another run in the third on an RBI single from Alex Christie.
Eastern put two men on base in the bottom of the third frame on a walk to
David Hunsberger and Barks being hit by a pitch, but a rally never materialized as a strikeout and a failed steal of second ended the inning. The Panthers doubled their lead in the fourth on RBI singles from Sam Perkins and Jake Danneman, along with a balk.
The Eagles broke the no-hit bid in the sixth inning on a
Griffin Falco single to center field and scored their lone run of the contest in the eighth. After a Hunsberger single and steal of second, Barks doubled down the right field line for his team-leading fourth RBI of the season. Barks, coming off a tremendous junior season, is batting .538 after the first four games with seven hits, three doubles, and two runs scored.
Gavin Mikulski, in his first appearance of the season, was solid in relief. Over the final five innings, the lefty allowed just four hits and one unearned run, striking out five.
Eastern (2-2) will be back in action tomorrow for a 3:00 pm first pitch against John Jay College.
