HAVERFORD, Pa. - In its season opener on Friday night, Eastern Women's Basketball struggled to get its offense on track in a 71-36 loss to the Haverford Fords at Calvin Gooding Arena. The Eagles shot just 19.7 percent from the floor and seven-of-16 from the free-throw line in the defeat.
Junior point guard
Jeriyah Johnson opened the scoring on a fast break in the opening minute, but seven straight points from Haverford's Caroline Orza gave the Fords the lead for good. The Eagles scored just six points in the opening frame as Haverford opened a 19-8 advantage.
The Fords continued to build their advantage in the second quarter and took a 21-point lead into the halftime break. The Eagles were within 11 points on a layup from transfer guard
Mojisola Shokeye early in the frame, but they would not get closer. The Fords' Shae Mercer hit a triple at the buzzer to make it a 37-16 advantage.
Haverford's lead grew to as many as 30 points in the third quarter as the Eastern offense continued to struggle. The Eagles shot just 1-of-16 in the frame and scored six points.
The Eagles knocked down their final three three-point attempts in the fourth quarter as
Damiyae Moyet hit two and and
Kayla Worsley-Wooten knocked down the other. The Eagles, however, did not draw closer than 27 points the rest of the way.
Worsley-Wooten, in her first game action since her sophomore season, scored seven points and collected nine rebounds to lead the Eagles in both categories. Moyet and Shokeye each scored six, while Johnson and
Stephanie White added four points apiece.
Eastern will be in The NEST for its home opener this coming Monday to take on the Gettysburg College Bullets. The game is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
