ALLENTOWN, Pa.– With 55 seconds left in the first half, Eastern University Women's Basketball led the host Muhlenberg College Mules 24-23 and had the ball. The game and shot clock buzzers in historic Memorial Hall deployed in unison and could not be silenced. The two teams played the final 21 minutes of the game without a visible clock, and the host Mules (4-1) pulled away to a 62-36 win.
The Eagles (0-5) played some of their best basketball of the season in the early going. They matched the hosts shot-for-shot in the first quarter, and built a six-point lead on back-to-back 3-pointers from
Damiyae Moyet and
Jeriyah Johnson to start the second quarter. Despite scoring only two more baskets in the half, a lay-up from
Maiah Madison and another Moyet long-range effort, the Eagles were within a basket at 26-24 at the break.
The second half has been tough for the Eagles throughout the start of the young season. Today, those struggles hit especially hard. Eastern made only 4-of-27 second-half shots while only attempting three free throws. The host Mules held a big advantage on the glass and forced 16 second-half turnovers to pull away.
The Eastern shooters struggled against the length of the Muhlenberg defenders and managed only 10 points in the paint for the game. Moyet made four 3-pointers to lead the Eagles with 12 points, and Johnson had ten.
Amelia Leister finished with six points.
The Eagles will have another crack at a Centennial Conference opponent this Saturday. They will host McDaniel College at 1:00 pm.
