Women's Volleyball Rolls Past Mustangs

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– In a rematch of the last three MAC Commonwealth Championship games, Eastern University Women's Volleyball earned an efficient three-set win over the visiting Stevenson University Mustangs. The Eagles hit .327 for the match and were successful on 33-of-45 sideout chances to beat the Mustangs for the seventh time in the seven outings since joining the MAC Commonwealth in 2021. First year outside hitter McKenzie Boyer posted a career-best 11 kills while hitting .550 for the match.

Throughout the match, the Eagles (12-5, 3-0)  passed well and did a great job of avoiding hitting errors. Through the opening set, the Eagles had just three hitting errors and only one ball, a tough left-handed chance from Hannah Pringle, miss the court.

The home side set the tone for the match early. They served aggressively and were up 21-11 before the Mustangs scored a point on serve. Boyer consistently hit holes in system and out and had six kills on only nine attacks in the first set. Hannah Pringle reached 900 career kills with her first termination of the evening. She posted five of her ten kills while hitting .571 in helping her side to win 25-15 in the first.

The Mustangs (10-8, 1-2)  had seven kills and hit .031 in the first. They did not record an ace in the match until they picked up their only one for their 15th point in the third set.

Elle Jiron Bujanda served four aces in a 25-11 win in the second set. With Logan Martin and Pringle each posting three kills as the Eagles hit .364 as a team. Eastern had only one hitting error in the second. The Mustangs scored just three times on serve in the second set. Jiron-Bujanda ended the set with a six-point serving run that included all four of her aces.

The Mustangs were within a point in the third set when Head Coach Mark Birtwistle called a timeout to refocus his squad. The chat worked well.

Logan Martin buried a kill off a perfect pass to earn the sideout. Viviana Fragoso served four points to start a 12-5 run that effectively ended the match. The Mustangs scored a late four-point run to close the gap to 23-17 before the Eagles picked up a sideout on a service error and Pringle slammed the door with her 12th kill of the match.

"We were efficient tonight," Birtwistle said. "We have been working on our out-of-system offense and both Kenzie and Hannah did a nice job of taking care of the ball. At some key points in the match we had some big defensive plays that kept the momentum on our side."

Grace Casagrande had a match-best 18 digs.Trinity Gruber added 11. Martin hit .421 with eight kills and two blocks, and Jiron-Bujanda finished with 33 assists and eight digs.

The Eagles are Hood College next week before heading up to Boston to take on the fourth-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers in another big non-league test a week from Saturday. The Engineers are one of four remaining unbeaten teams in Division III.
