ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer scored five times in the opening 62 minutes on the way to a convincing 5-0 MAC Commonwealth win over the visiting Albright College Lions.
Billinda Leisner and
Mia Zucker each scored a goal in each half to pace the Eastern attack to its highest output since 2021 and most productive day in a league contest since 2015.
While the Eagles came into the contest needing a result in their home finale to take another big step toward claiming a spot in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament, the Lions (2-12-2, 0-6) arrived on Eastern's campus having lost by a big number at York and knowing that their season would wrap up at Messiah on Saturday.
The guests were relaxed int he early going and fended off Eastern pressure on the way to forcing a couple corners at the other end.
Emma Bennett created a couple early chances for the Eagles but Albright goalkeeper Alexis Solt stopped a couple shots early. In the 16th minute, Bennett played Zucker into dangerous space. Solt made the initial stop, but her diving effort left her out of the play and Leisner won the race for the rebound and tucked it away for her fourth career goal.
Thirteen minutes later, Bennett escaped into scoring space on the left side and ripped a low shot that again tested Solt. Zucker slid in her ninth tally of the year for the important insurance goal. The goal was the first on Olson Field for the sophomore striker.
The Eagles held an 8-to-2 edge in first-half shots, but the 2-0 lead felt to close for comfort.
Out of the intermission, Bennett took over, the junior midfielder sliced through the right side of the Albright defense to provide dangerous opportunities. Solt made a couple sharp saves and several other crosses went unrecognized.
Tia Argento stepped into attacking space and tucked home her first career goal to put the Eagles up three.
Zucker added a striker's goal after intercepting a back pass in the 52nd minute, and Leisner capped the scoring with a redirection of a Bennett cross in the 62nd minute.
Brooke Moskey replaced
Faith Leake in goal to combine for the shutout.
The win gives the Eagles 12 points (three points per win) in league play. With the rest of the league playing on Wednesday evening Stevenson and Hood could both reach 13. York is already at 12 points with a tiebreaker against the Eagles. If Hood and Stevenson drop points tonight, the Eagles will have secured at least the third seed in the MAC Commonwealth. If both Hood and Stevenson win, the Eagles will need to earn at least a draw at Widener on Saturday to lock up the third spot.
Eastern's 11 wins are the most by an Eastern team since the 2011 team went 13-5-3 and won the MAC Freedom Tournament. Eastern will wrap up the regular season with a 4 PM match at Widener on Saturday.
