READING, Pa. – With a three-set win at Albright College, Eastern University Women's Volleyball earned their sixth straight-set decision in six matches this year. The win, coupled with Messiah's home win over Hood, sets up next week's match between Eastern and Messiah as a battle for the MAC Commonwealth regular-season title and the top seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
Logan Martin finished with 12 kills and hit .500 for the match.
The Eagles dominated the opening two sets but needed a late rally in the third to close out the match. With
Hannah Pringle resting for the third set, the Eagles had Martin hitting on the outside and several other changes int he lineup. The hosts stretched an 8-6 lead to 20-13 advantage.
Viviana Fragoso served four points to close the gap to 20-17, and then
Natalie Saxton put the Eagles up 23-21 with five service points.
Jailene Lugo had the first kill in the run, and Martin had two.
Grace Nealy and Lugo combined on a block for the 23-21 lead. The two teams traded sideouts to finish the match.
The Eagles hit .189 in the final set. Martin had seven kill on 14 swings. Lugo had three kills, and
Jessie Schreiber had two. The Lions had 12 kills and three aces in becoming just the second league team to reach 20 points in a set this season.
The Eagles were very efficient in the opening two sets. They had 17 kills and just one error on the way to a 25-10 win the first set. Martin and
Bridgette Kelly each had five kills, and Pringle had six.
Elle Jiron-Bujanda had 14 assists and the team hit .457. The eagles were successful on 10-of-12 first-set sideout chances.
Martin and Kelly stepped aside for the second set, but the Eagles still hit .355 as a team and won 25-11. Pringle had four kills to bring her match total to ten. Saxton and Nealy each put away a couple balls and hit .500. The passing was still solid as the Eagles were able to convert 7-of-10 sideout chances.
Grace Casagrande had nine of her 21 digs in the second set. Fragoso finished the match with 15 digs.
"The team played efficiently in the first couple of sets," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said after the match. "We served and attacked well. We got behind in the third but Viv gave us a serving run and Natalie backed it up to get us back on top."
The Eagles, who close the regular season with four-straight home contests have two big regional matches before the Messiah contest. They will host NYU on Friday at 6:00 PM in a rematch of last year's Regional semifinal. The Violets reached the Final Four in each of the past two seasons and have been in the National rankings for much of the year. The eagles will then host Kean College on Saturday at 5:00 PM.
Eastern and Messiah will play on Election Day at 7:00 PM.
