ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Women's Soccer played an excellent second half on Friday night, creating several strong scoring chances, but could find the back of the net in a 2-0 Homecoming to the York College Spartans. Abby Brown scored in the 23rd minute and Alyssa Russell added a late insurance tally in the 88th to secure the win for the visitors.
The Spartans dominated both possession and field position in the first half and outshot the Eagles 8-2. In the 23rd minute, Brown was able to snake through the defense and put a shot on frame. Her first attempt was saved, but her second found twine to put the Spartans ahead 1-0.
After halftime, however, the Eagles made their adjustments and began to attack the defense with positive results. Eastern outshot the Spartans 7-5 in the final 45 minutes, but could not find twine.
Eastern's best chance came in the 65th minute. First-year forward
Billinda Leisner made a perfect cross to
Ella Marrollo off a strong pass from
Leah Fowler, but Marrollo's header sailed just over the net. Eastern had a free kick in the 85th minute, but
Nicole Eveland's shot was saved by York goalie Joss Metz. A few minutes later, Russell deposited a rebound chance to double the York lead and ultimately secure their victory.
Ashlynn Keys led the Eagles with three shots, while Eveland, Marrollo, Fowler,
Emma Bennett, and
Olivia Nicholson each finished with one.
Faith Leake played another solid game in net with seven saves.
Eastern (7-4-3, 0-2) will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 16 for a non-conference showdown with the Arcadia Knights. The contest is set to begin at 3:30 pm.
