Field Hockey Wins at Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey used goals on either side of the third quarter break to earn a 2-0 win at Delaware Valley University. The Eagles (4-5) had a 19-8 edge in shots and a 13-4 edge in penalty corners in picking up the team's second shutout win of the week.

Despite having a resounding edge in possession and field position through the opening two periods, the game remained tied until very late in the third quarter. Eastern's first 11 penalty corners of the match failed to produce a goal, but the Eagles got what proved to be the game-winner on their 12th. Abby Hakes played the insert to Becca Webb at the top of the circle. Webb settled the pass and ripped a low shot that hit off the goalkeeper's pads. JoEl Groff was in position to tap in the rebound for her team-best fifth goal of the year.

Shortly after the intermission, the Eagles doubled the lead following a Delaware Valley penalty corner. Abby Agapito made a stick save on a high shot, and the Eagles escaped the zone on a good clearance from Grace Wise, Paige Brouse, and Jenna Rider.

Rider slipped a ball into space on the left side. Ellie Pruitt raced into the circle but spun back and dropped a pass to Rider after a solid defensive play at the edge of the circle. Rider hit a drive toward goal that Pruitt volleyed to the back post for her first goal of the year.

The Eastern defense held the Aggies without a shot the rest of the way to preserve the shutout. Agapito made five stops to secure the win.

The Eagles are off this weekend and will wrap up their non-league schedule with a game at Lancaster Bible next Tuesday.
