TACOMA, Wash.– Eastern University Women's Volleyball (2-0) put together big runs in both matches to earn a pair of season-opening wins at the Puget Sound Premiere.
Hannah Pringle pounded out 11 kills and
Logan Martin hit an impressive .500 in a three-set win over the Adrian College Bulldogs in the opener.
Bridgette Kelly had 11 kills and five blocks to lead a balanced offense to a 3-1 win over the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes in the late game.
The Eagles trailed 18-11 in the opening set against Adrian. Kelly started the Eastern run with a kill for a sideout, she then combined with Pringle for a block to close the gap to 18-13. The Eagles earned another point on a Pringle kill. The two teams traded sideouts before
Trinity Gruber went back to the service line with the Eagles down 19-15. The junior defensive specialist served ten in a row to cap a 14-1 run to close the opening set. Gruber served three aces and
Jailene Lugo had a pair of kills in the final run.
The Eagles hit .333 in winning the second set 25-21. With five terminations, Pringle paced five hitters with multiple kills in the set.
Grace Casagrande had seven of her match-best 12 digs in the second.
Eastern built a 14-7 third-set lead behind the strong serving of Casagrande and Gruber. The Eagles held that advantage through the end to win the third set 25-17.
After. Game off, the Eagles came out of the gates a little slowly against PLU. Though not the hosts, the Lutes were in their home town, scored the first seven points of the match, and looked comfortable early. The Eagles trailed 9-1 before Pringle and Kelly combined on a block to stop the run.
Elle Jiron-Bujanda served for a couple points, and the Eagles slowly ground back into the set. The Eagles finally tied the score at 23-23 on a kill from Emma Torres and earned a 27-25 win on a kill from Martin. Martin, Lugo and Kelly each had four kills in the opening set.
The biggest Eastern run of the day came at the start of the second set against PLU. After
Viviana Fragoso served a point, the Lutes earned a sideout to tie the set at 1-1. PLU did not side out again until the Eastern lead stood at 14-1. Casagrande served six aces in the run. The Lutes played the finish of the second relatively close, but the Eagles could be content to trade points on the way to a 25-10 win. The Eastern hitters hit .417 in the set.
After dropping a close third set, the Eastern offense found its rhythm with an astounding 25-12 win in the fourth. The Eagles went 12-for-12 on sideout chances did not commit a hitting error with 15 kill on 26 attacks. Kelly had four kills and three blocks in the final frame. Casagrande finished the second match with 25 digs.
Eastern will play The College of Saint Benedict from Minnesota tomorrow morning (noon Eastern time) and then battle the host Loggers in the early afternoon.
