Men's Lacrosse Tops Hood in Regular Season Finale

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse wrapped up the regular season with a 21-8 home win over the Hood College Blazers. As the team celebrated its seniors, Nicholas Fanelli had yet another milestone afternoon as he broke Eastern's single season and career point records with three goals and seven assists. Twelve different Eastern players scored in the win.

The day started with Eastern playing with ten seniors or graduate students in their final year on the field, and before the opening whistle, Ian Kalb stepped off. He was replaced by fellow senior Jared Hoerter. Kalb was a regular starter on defense before an injury ended his final season before it started.

With two faceoff players on the attack, the opening minutes were a little rugged for the home team. The Blazers scored first, but Nicholas Fanelli scored back to back goals to up 2-1. The senior attack stole a faceoff win for Patrick McClain with a hard check just as the Hood faceoff player picked up the ball.

The Blazers answered with two goals to grab would be their final lead of the game. At 3-2. Christopher Fanelli then scored two straight to put the Eagles up for good. The first came on a pass from Nick Litzenberger and the second came on a man-up goal from his brother. With that pass Nicholas tied the career-point mark of 254 set by Grant Ferguson. Three minutes later, he broke the record on a point-blank shot on a feed from his brother. Fittingly, the goal came after the Eagles blew up a Hood clearing attempt. Avery Porter checked the ball free and Greyson Sprinkle picked up the ball and fired it forward to Christopher who drew the defense before feeding his brother.

With the hat trick complete, the older Fanelli then set his intention on providing. He set up six goals the rest of the way and finished the day with 10 points. He set the single-season mark with a pass to Avery Porter for a goal midway through the third quarter. David Darling had 91 points in 2014. Fanelli now has 97 points on the year.

The Eagles scored the final three goals of the first half. Luc Trudel scored a right-handed goal on a pass from Nicholas Fanelli and Gavin Stark scored out of a timeout to close the half.

The Eagles led 8-4 at halftime but blew the game open in the final tow-thirds of the third period. The Blazers scored the first goal of the second half three and a half minutes. Porter then answered on a brilliant pass from Nick Litzenberger. With Porter cutting above goal-line-extended from behind on the goalies left, Litzenberger fired a a left-handed pass through a tangle of sticks to the back post. Porter finished with four goals and an assist.

The Eastern ride again played a major role in changing the game. The Blazers failed 6-of-14 first half clears and were only 3-of-8 in the third. Brady Palmer forced five turnovers and Nathan Gilbert forced four as the Blazers, with both Fanelli and Porter applying pressure, struggled to pass over top of the Eastern ride.

Jason Poole scored on a spinning shot from the high crease after an Anthony Firmani face off win and Dan Divita scored off another Hood turnover. Hood's Robbie Wiley stemmed the tide momentarily with an individual effort, but a penalties on the visitors gave the Eagles a man advantage  Ryan Drobnick scored off a feed from Nicholas Fanelli.

Connor Bachman and Jake Gottschalk scored the final two goals of the third quarter. Stark, Litzenberger, Porter, and Zach Washco all scored man-up goals in the fourth quarter. Nicholas Fanelli had assists on the first three. Eastern was 6-of-8 on man-up chances in the game.

Connor Evans played the whole game and picked up the win in his first start of the year. The senior made nine stops and picked off a pass. McClain went 10-for-19 on faceoffs and Firmani was 9-for-14.

The game is likely the final home game for longtime Head Coach Kevin Wallace, who announced in January that this season would be his last. He won the final MAC Championship in 2012 and then won five more MAC Freedom titles over the next seven years. His teams have had success on the field and in the classroom. He will become the Athletic Director at nearby Delaware County Christian School in July.

The Eagles (9-8, 6-2) know their playoff path. As the third seed, they will play at Stevenson on Wednesday. Top-seeded York will take on the winner of the game between four-seed Widener and fifth-seeded Messiah.
