ANNVILLE, Pa. - On Wednesday afternoon, Eastern Softball dropped a pair of contests at Lebanon Valley, the No. 1 team in the MAC Commonwealth. The Eagles battled valiantly, but squandered a few big opportunities in a 4-2 defeat in game one, before recording just four hits in a 5-0 loss in game two.
The Dutchmen (25-5, 10-0) struck first in game one on a Nicole Kratz RBI single, and Lindsey McCurdy later scored on a wild pitch. Both runs came with two outs. LVC added two more runs in the third on a Julia Craig RBI single and a Kratz RBI double.
Mackenzie Laub and
Tori Hook led off the fourth inning with a pair of singles, and the Eagles loaded the bases with one out. While Eastern was able to push a run across on a
Sophie Rollins bases-loaded walk, the Dutchmen were able to escape the jam without any further damage. The Eagles grounded into three fielders choices in the inning.
The Eagles got another run back on a Hook RBI groundout in the fifth, and once again loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh. However, LVC pitcher Jenna Walter secured her complete-game win with back-to-back strikeouts to end the contest. Laub finished 3-for-3 in the contest, while Hook and
Alyssa Binczak each recorded a hit for Eastern.
After two scoreless innings to begin game two, LVC took the lead for good in the third frame on RBI singles from Craig and Sam Burns. The Dutchmen added three insurance runs in the fifth, two coming on a Craig home run, to increase their advantage to 5-0. The Eagles recorded just one more hit in the final two innings as the Dutchmen kept their unblemished conference record intact. Laub, Hook, Rollins, and
Maeve Colligan each recorded a hit for the Eagles in the nightcap.
Eastern (18-9, 6-4) will be back in action this Saturday for a pair of games at Stevenson. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
