Baseball Falls to Widener in Series Opener

CHESTER, Pa. - In it series opener with Widener on Tuesday afternoon, Eastern Baseball dropped a tough 8-5 decision to the Pride at Widener Baseball Field. The Eagles held leads of 2-0 and 4-3, but a four-run sixth inning for the hosts proved to be the difference.

Eastern struck first in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs on a Widener fielding error. Evan Barks and Matt McHale hit back-to-back singles, and McHale swiped second to put two runners in scoring position with only one out. Sean Cottrell hit a grounder that was misplayed by the Widener second basemen, and the miscue scored Barks and McHale to give Eastern a 2-0 lead. Widener answered with an RBI groundout from Justin Costanzo to make it 2-1 after the first inning of play.

The Eagles looked like they would add to their lead in the fourth on a Joe Paradise hit off the left field wall that scored Camden Angell. However, on a controversial call, Paradise was called out on a flyout, and Angell was doubled up at second base. Brian Lang followed with a double of his own to left field, but the Eagles would not score in the inning.

The Pride scored single runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-2 lead, but Eastern answered back with a two-run home run from Lang in the top of the sixth. On a 1-0 count, Lang crushed a fastball over the left field wall to put the Eagles back ahead 4-3. For Lang, it was his second home run of the season and the third of his Eastern career.

However, Widener took the lead back for good with a four-run sixth frame, courtesy of two-run doubles from Kyle Brex and Andrew Yates. Eastern got one run back on a Griffin Falco RBI double in the eighth, but could not complete the comeback.

Lang had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, a run scored, and two runs batted in. Cottrell finished 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs batted in, while Falco added two hit in four at-bats.

Eastern returns to The Yard tomorrow for a non-conference contest with regional foe Haverford. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
