ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse held its ground against a nationally-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology team, but the visiting Ducks scored six of the final eight goals in the contest to pull away to a 14-10 win.
Christopher Fanelli and
Nicholas Fanelli each had three goals and
Connor Bachman and
Nick Litzenberger each scored twice.
The Eagles (3-3) scored the first two goals of the game and led 4-2 at the quarter against a team riding a five-game winning streak and coming off a 15-7 win over No. 12 Wesleyan. Litzenberger opened the scoring in the third minute and
Nicholas Fanelli doubled the Eastern lead less than a minute later. Stevens answered with a pair of tallies before
Christopher Fanelli put the Eagles up on an even-strength tally off a pass from Bachman. Fanelli finished the quarter with a man-up goal on a man-up catch-and-shoot effort off a long skip pass from
Avery Porter.
The wind played a major role in the opening part of the game as both teams employer ten-man rides to force the opposition to try to clear over the top. Stevens opened the scoring in the second, but the Eagles answered with an individual effort from Bachman and a finish on the back pipe from
Nicholas Fanelli on a brilliant skip from Porter.
That three-goal edge, however, would be short-lived. The Ducks scored five-straight to close out the quarter and go into halftime with an 8-6 lead. Junior midfielder Keegan Hughes was the problem for the Eagles. He scored three of his game-high six goals in the burst. The Eagles could take a little encouragement from a late Stevens penalty which would allow them to start the second half with the ball and up a player.
The Eagles took advantage with a
Nicholas Fanelli goal 18 seconds in and tied the score on Bachman's second of the day four minutes later.
The Ducks broke the tie and took the lead for good a solo-effort from Hughes with eight and a half minutes to play. The Ducks scored the next two goals before Litzenberger scored in the waning moments of the third to close the gap to 11-9.
Needing stops, the Stevens defense got a huge lift from goalie Ryan Leahy. In the time the Ducks led by two, the graduate student ended four Eastern possessions with saves. Leahy finished with 15 total saves. The Ducks scored the first goal of the fourth at the midway point and added two more before the Eagles could strike again.
Christopher Fanelli scored with two and a half minutes left, but the Eagles were not able to earn enough possession for a rally.
Patrick McClain went 17-for-27 at the faceoff X and finished with eight ground balls.
Ethan Myers made 12 stops in goal.
The Eagles will host the University of Scranton Royals on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
