Baseball Drops Two Tight Games at Alvernia

READING, Pa.– Eastern University Baseball dropped a pair of tight decisions at Alvernia to open the MAC Commonwealth season. After a dropping a 4-3 11-inning heartbreaker in the opener, the Eagles saw a late push fall short in a 9-6 loss in the nightcap.

This season, MAC doubleheaders are slated for two seven-inning games. Seven innings would not be enough to get a result in game one. Alvernia went up 2-0 on a two-out two-RBI single in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles scratched out a single run in the fourth. David Hunsberger doubled to lead off and came around to score on a Mark Cruser sacrifice fly.

John Beck kept the Golden Wolves' hitters off balance, and Grifin Falco homered to left center to lead off the fifth. Alvernia plated an unearned run in the fifth, but the Eagles had an answer in the top of the sixth. Hunsberger again started the rally. The senior shortstop doubled and scored on a one-out single from Cruser.

Beck finished the seventh, but gave way to Gavin Mikulski after the Eagles failed to score with two on and one out in the eighth. Mikulski held the hosts scoreless through his first 3.1 innings, back-to-back doubles with one out in the eighth ended the game.

When the Golden Wolves scored eight of the first nine runs in game two, the Eagles refused to pack it in. With one out in the fifth, Matt McHale delivered a two-run homer. One out later, Falco hooked one around the left-field foul pole to close the Alvernia lead to 8-4. Falco's last three hits have all left the yard.

Jin Lee worked a scoreless fifth and the Eagles scratched out a run on two hits and left the bases loaded in the sixth. The Golden Wolves grabbed back an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth but the Eagles could only score a single time in the top of the seventh.

The two teams are slated to finish the league series at Eastern tomorrow afternoon with a nine-inning game scheduled to start at 3:00 pm (Fans are reminded to turn clocks forward an hour tonight- your phone does this automatically).
