ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - In its penultimate home game of the season, Eastern Women's Basketball (4-17, 2-11) dropped a 70-47 decision to Albright at the NEST on Wednesday night. The contest was tied at 20-20 early in the second quarter, but a big run for the visiting Lions resulted in a lead they would not relinquish.
First-year guard
Jeriyah Johnson led the Eagles with 13 points, the 17th time in Eastern's 21 games that she has scored double-digits.
Wynter Bess scored nine points, while
Jakaylah Holland added seven points and seven rebounds.
Albright (16-7, 10-4) built an early 9-4 lead, before Holland ripped off five points on back-to-back possessions to pull the Eagle within one point. The Lions were able to increase its advantage back to five, before baskets from Johnson and Bess made it 16-15. Albright's Amina Rauf scored with 34 seconds left to give the Lions an 18-15 lead.
In the first 90 seconds of the second quarter, a layup from Johnson and a three-pointer from Bess tied the contest at 20-20. However, the Lions took control of the game from there, using a 21-9 run over the final 7:43 of the first half to take a 41-26 lead at halftime.
In that time frame, Albright shot eight-of-12 from the field and two-of-three from beyond the arc. Conversely, the Eagles shot just four-of-11 and one-of-four from distance. Albright led by double-digits the rest of the way, never allowing their advantage to fall below 17 points.
The Eagles' offensive struggles continued against the Lions. Eastern shot just 18-of-60 (30 percent) from the field and three-of-12 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. Additionally, Eastern turned the ball over 16 times, which led to 11 Albright points.Â
Eastern will be back on the road Saturday to take on Messiah for the second and final time this season. The contest is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
