Eagles Soar Again with Two More Wins in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Eastern Softball put together another strong day at the Diamondplex to earn two more victories on day two of its Spring Break. The Eagles used a four-run sixth inning to come away with a 7-1 over Dubuque in game one, before rallying with a five-run fifth frame in game two to beat Alma 5-2. It is the second straight season that the Eagles have started 4-0.

After a scoreless opening frame against Dubuque, first-year outfielder Mackenzie Laub broke the the tie with a two-out, two-run home run, the first of her career, to center field, giving the Eagles a 2-0 advantage. Two innings later, the Whitehall, Pa. native drove in her third run of the afternoon, a RBI single to right field, to score Faith Zanetich and put the Eagles ahead 3-0. Laub finished the day with two hits, two runs scored, and a team-leading three runs batted in, her first three in an Eastern uniform.

The Spartans got a run back in their half of the fifth inning, but the Eagles put the contest on ice with a four-run sixth frame. Three runs were scored on Dubuque fielding errors, and Sydney Ostolaza drove in her sixth run of the spring to secure Eastern's third win.

Kelci Cost led the Eastern offense with three hits in four at-bats, and seven other Eagles finished with at least one hit. First-year pitcher Bryn Clifford (2-0) recorded her second win in as many days, allowing just four hits and one earned run in four innings of work. Jania Long collected her first save of the campaign, striking out four in the final three frames.

Eastern fell behind early against Alma in game two as the Scots took advantage of a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. For the next four innings, the Eastern offense was only able to muster one base hit. However, in the fifth frame, the Eagles found a little two-out magic.

Brianna Bowles began the rally with a walk, before Elena Iannuzzelli singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. Ostolaza continued her torrid offensive production, scoring Bowles with an RBI single to tie the contest at 1-1.

Cost kept the rally going with a two-run single through the middle of the infield, giving the Eagles the lead, and Long capped it off with a two-run knock to right field to increase Eastern's advantage to four. The Scots were able to get one run back in the top of the sixth, but the Eagles' defense and pitching held strong the rest of the way.

Long (1-0) recorded her first win of the season in the circle, allowing four hits and just one unearned run while striking out four. Tori Hook collected two hits in three at-bats, while Cost and Long each finished with a pair of RBI.

The Eagles have an off day Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday for two more contests. Eastern will play Moravian at 2:00 pm followed by Houghton at 4:30 pm.
