Softball Earns Split on Day Three in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Eastern Softball (5-1) returned to action on Thursday for two more contests after an off day Wednesday. The Eagles dropped their first game of the young season, a 10-2 decision to an annually strong Moravian squad, in their first contest, but bounced back with a 11-2, run-rule victory over Houghton in the nightcap.

After a scoreless first frame, Eastern scored three runs in the top of the second to take a lead it would not relinquish. Sydney Ostolaza started the rally with a single to right field, before Mackenzie Laub doubled to center to put runners on second and third with one out. Back-to-back walks from Amanda Bruno and Elena Iannuzzelli gave Eastern a 1-0 lead, before Cost drove home two runs with a single to right to increase Eastern's advantage to 3-0.

Eastern put the contest out of reach with a six-run third frame. Jania Long hit her second home run of the season over the left field fence to make it 4-0. Five batters later, an Iannuzelli infield single scored Ostolaza to increase the Eastern lead to five. A bases-loaded walk to Cost, an infield single by Kacie Noonan, and a two-run single by Tori Hook made it a 9-0 Eastern lead heading into the fourth inning.

The Eagles added two more runs in the fourth on a Faith Zanetich two-run single to center field, and the pitching trio of Hailey Krichten, Victoria Perez, and Madisyn Saposnek held down the fort in the circle the rest of the way to secure the run-rule triumph.

Ostolaza finished 3-for-3 at the dish with three runs scored, while Laub went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Cost finished the contest with a hit and three RBI, while Hook, Zanetich, and Iannuzzelli drove in two runs apiece. Krichten (1-0) earned her first win of the season in the circle, striking out three and allowing just three hits and one earned run in 2.2 innings of work.

Eastern struck first in their opener against Moravian on a bases loaded walk, but the Greyhounds scored five runs in each the second and fourth frames to hand the Eagles their first loss of the spring. Cost finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Iannuzzelli and Tori Hook each had one knock. Sami Britton also finished with an RBI.

The Eagles wrap up their Spring Break trip tomorrow morning at the DiamondPlex. They will face St. Mary's at 9:00 am followed by Calvin at 11:30 am.
