OWINGS MILL, Md. - Down six with 1:42 remaining in the contest, Eastern Women's Basketball ended the game on an 8-0 run, which included six points from
Wynter Bess, to give the Eagles a 62-60 triumph over the Stevenson Mustangs (7-18, 6-10) in its final game of the season. Bess' layup off of a Stevenson turnover with 14 seconds left helped clinch the season sweep over the Mustangs.
Four Eagles finished in double figures in the win, led by
Jeriyah Johnson's 19. The first-year guard from Lancaster knocked down five triples and scored double-digit points for the 20th time this season. Bess scored 14 points, while
Taryn Woodson recorded her third-straight double-double, and ninth of the year, with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Jakaylah Holland rounded out Eastern's double-digit scorers with 11 points to go along with seven boards.
The scoring was slow to start, as both teams were tied 5-5 with 2:45 to play in the first quarter. The Eagles (5-19, 3-13) ended the quarter on a 8-3 run, which included baskets from Bess and
Trinity Upton, to take a 13-8 advantage into the second frame.
The Eagles built their lead to eight points at 21-13 with 5:08 to play in the first half, but the Mustangs answered with seven straight points to tie the contest at 21-21 with 3:13 on the clock. The two teams traded points for the reminder of the first half, before a pair of free throws from Holland gave Eastern a 26-25 lead at the halftime break.
Holland scored on the Eagles' second possession of the second half and Bess followed with two free throws to put Eastern up 30-25. However, the Mustangs responded with a 14-4 surge over the next five-and-a-half minutes to take a 39-34 lead. A Holland three closed the gap to two, but Stevenson was able to push their advantage to seven points with 1:36 to play. Eastern was again able to close the gap, scoring the final five points of the period to make it 45-43 heading into the fourth quarter. Johnson hit a triple with two seconds remaining to make it a one-possession game.
Stevenson scored five points out of the gate to regain their seven-point advantage and held a 60-54 lead with 1:42 to play on two Morgan Pennick free throws. The Mustangs had a chance to put the game away, but a missed layup led to a foul on Bess on the other end. Bess knocked down both free throws to cut the Mustangs' lead to four. A block by Woodson on Stevenson's following possession led to another foul on Bess, and the graduate forward knocked down two more from the charity stripe to make it 60-58 Mustangs.
Holland hit a long two on Eastern's next possession to tie the game at 60-60, and a well-executed trap by Johnson led a Stevenson turnover. Upton found a streaking Bess at half court, and the subsequent layup with 14 seconds remaining gave the Eagles a 62-60 advantage. Stevenson's final shot came up empty, and the Eagles hung to secure the win.
