ST. DAVIDS, Pa– In a second home twi-match of the year, Eastern University Men's Volleyball rolled to a pair of three-set wins. The Eagles hit .321 to beat local rival Cairn (2-5) to start the day and hit .370 in the opening two sets on the way to an efficient win over Brooklyn College.
In the opening set, the Eagles and Highlanders stood tied at 18.
Josiah Cash put away a big kill and then served three straight points to give his side a four-point cushion. The Eagles were able to side-out to a 25-21 win. Led by four kills from
Andres Suarez Batista, five different Eastern hitters recorded kills in the opening set.
The Eastern offense was nearly flawless in a 25-17 second-set win. The Eagles finished with 11 kills and no errors for a .647 hitting percentage. Cash had a pair of Aces and
Tiger Winston finished the set with a pair of service points.
The third set was a back-and forth affair with neither team leading by more than two points until the Eagles reeled off three straight points late to go up 24-20. Cash and
Chris Miller combined on a block to take the Eagles to match point. The Highlanders served aggressively to close the gap to 24-23 before the Eagles closed out the match with a 25-23 win.
Lucas Adam and Suarez Batista each had nine kills hitting outside, and
Max Bagileo and Cash both hit over .360 out of the middle. Suarez Batista had a team-high eight digs and was part of a serve-receive group that allowed only three aces. Miller had 32 assists and six digs.
After Cairn and Brooklyn finished the middle match, the Eagles returned to the floor to finish the day against the Bulldogs (4-5).
Eastern won the opening set 25-10.
Jeremiah Pha, who hit on the right side for the first match, took over setting duties and the Eastern attack still hit .333.
Pha took the second set off and Miller returned to help the Eagles to hit .409 and win 25-11. Pha returned for the final set and the Eagles won 25-15. Cash had a team-best nine kills and a .667 hitting percentage. Bailey was also very efficient with six kills and no errors on 13 attacks. The Eastern serve receive did not allow an ace in the match.
With midterms and spring break coming, the Eagles (5-7) have three weeks to recover before entering into the second half of the schedule. They play at Hood College on March 4.
