GALLOWAY, N.J.– With a pair of three-set wins today, Eastern University Women's Volleyball ran its winning streak to twelve games. The Eagles beat the Neumann University Knights in the noon match and handled the host Ospreys in the final match of the tri-match.
Logan Martin finished the two matches with 19 kills and a .533 hitting percentage.
On the road for the third time this week, the Eagles knew today would present an important challenge. In the first NCAA Regional Rankings, Stockton (20-10) sat in the second spot in Region IV. Earlier this year, the Eagles earned a four-set win at Cortland, currently ranked second in Region III. In addition to the challenge presented by the two good teams, the Eagles would need rise to the challenge of playing their seventh and eighth road matches in the last nine days.
The Stockton match presented the additional challenge of being the second match of a back-to-back.
To start the match, the Eagles ground through a bunch of long points but trailed 8-6. The eagles tied the opening set on back-to-back kills from
Jailene Lugo and then took the lead on a big solo block from Martin.
Bridgette Kelly forced a Stockton timeout with an ace and then served for another point to put the Eagles up 11-8.
The Ospreys tied the match at 11, but a service error and a five-point run from
Grace Cooper put the Eagles up for good in the set. Cooper had a team-high four aces in the match against Stockton. In the middle of the run, the hosts took a second timeout, but a block from Martin and a kill from
Emma Flores put the Eastern lead at 17-11. The Eagles won the opening set 25-15.
Hannah Pringle and Flores each had four kills and
Jailene Lugo. Eastern hit .250 but was only 9-for-16 on sideout chances.
To start the second set, the Eagles were very efficient in serve receive. The Ospreys scored only two points on their first nine serves, and the Eagles built a 17-9 lead. Kelly,
Trinity Gruber, and
Grace Casagrande each had service aces in the early part of the second set. The eight-point edge was more than enough as the Eastern serves and attack put the Ospreys out of system and led to a 25-16 win. Flores had four kills and the Eagles hit just .125 in the set.
With the end of their road trip in sight, the Eagles hit .370 and won the final set 25-17. Martin had seven kills on eight attacks and Cooper served for three aces. The Eagles never trailed in the third.
Casagrande had 15 digs to lead the Eastern defense and Martin and Kelly each had four blocks.
Elle Jiron-Bujanda had 32 assists and the Eagles hit .262 against Neumann (17-10). Martin had 11 kills on 15 attempts and
Lexi Couch added nine kills. Casagrande had 12 digs and three aces.
After winning the opening two sets 25-20, the Eagles were perfect in serve-receive (12-for-12) in winning the final set 25-11.
"I am super proud of the way we finished the regular season," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said. "Stockton was a very strong team and we played solid ball. Our serving was strong and helped keep their aggressive hitters out of system. It was a great team effort."
With the regular season in the books, the Eagles will start the MAC Commonwealth Tournament at home on Wednesday. They will host fourth-seeded York. The winner of that match will play the winner of the match between Messiah and Stevenson for the MAC Commonwealth title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
