Turnovers Cost Football at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - In its penultimate contest of its first official season, Eastern Football dropped a tough 42-10 decision to a veteran Widener squad (7-2, 6-2) at Leslie C. Quick Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles committed five turnovers in the loss, with the Pride scoring 28 points off of those giveaways.

First-year quarterback Sabor Stevens led the Eagles with seven completions for 144 yards, while sophomore quarterback Brett Nabb led Eastern with 65 rushing yards and a touchdown. Eddie Swinton led the receiving corps with 51 yards on three receptions. Defensively, Jamauri James finished with seven total tackles, Vaughn Highland recorded six, and Dru Beckford added five. Tahjere Jackson-Alston collected four tackles and his first career interception.

Three of Eastern's first four drives ended with an interception, and the Pride took advantage, building a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. Widener quarterback Chase Diehl tossed a pair of touchdowns to Isaac Hostetter and Zach Vanscovich, respectively, and Shawn Thompson added a rushing score on the Pride's second drive.

The Eagles scored all of their points in the second quarter. Off a 32-yard Widener punt, the Eagles embarked on a seven-play, 55 yard drive, capping it off with a one-yard touchdown plunge from Nabb. The drive was highlighted by a 31-yard pass from Stevens to first-year receiver Keyon Wilson, which put the Eagles in striking distance, before Nabb punched it in three plays later.

After the Eagles' defense got a stop on fourth down, the Eagles' offense got right back to work with an 11-play, 52-yard drive, capping the possession with a 36-yard field goal from John Nolek. At halftime, Eastern trailed the Pride 21-10.

However, the Eagles would not score again. Widener rattled off 21 consecutive points, and the Pride defense recorded two more turnovers after halftime to secure their sixth win of the year.

The Eagles (2-7, 2-6) will wrap up its inaugural season next Saturday, Nov. 11 at Stevenson. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
