READING, Pa. - A blistering offensive performance and an equally impressive showing on defense proved to the difference on Wednesday night as Eastern Women's Basketball recorded a dominant 88-44 triumph over Penn State Berks, the first in the
Sarah Fowler era. The Eagles shot 52.9 percent from the floor, their best shooting night of the young season, while four players finished in double figures and 12 scored at least two points.
Graduate forward
Miranda Liebtag played a tremendous all-around game, finishing with a season-high 20 points on eight-of-11 shooting and three-of-five from beyond the arc. Thirteen of those points came in the first quarter. Additionally, the former Cabrini standout added four rebounds, four assists, one block, and four steals.
Junior
Taryn Woodson recorded her fourth straight double-digit scoring outing with 18 points on eight-of-11 shooting along with a team-high seven rebounds.
Wynter Bess bounced back with a 12-point effort, while
Jeriyah Johnson rounded out Eastern's double-digit scorers with 10 points, four rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Sophomore
Brooklyn Hmel made the most of her minutes with seven points on three-of-four shooting off the bench.
Stephanie White and
Maiah Madison each scored four points,
Jakaylah Holland,
Trinity Upton, and
Camila Sosa scored three, and both
Tyerra Jarvis and
Damiyae Moyet scored two. Upton also finished the contest with a career-high nine assists to go along with five rebounds and four steals.
After both teams began the contest with back-to-back turnovers, Bess, Woodson, and Holland scored on each of Eastern's following three possession to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead. After the Lions (1-6) battled to go up 12-11 late in the frame, Liebtag stole the show, scoring the Eagles' final 10 points to turn a one-point deficit into a nine-point advantage. The Abington native went four-for-four down the stretch, including two-for-two from beyond the arc.
After Woodson opened the second quarter with a layup, the Lions cut the Eastern lead to five with a quick six-point run. The Eagles, however, grabbed the momentum back, outscoring Penn State 16-2 over the rest of the first half. The Lions did not score again until there was nine seconds in the period on a pair of free throws. Woodson scored eight more points over the final 5:45, while Bess and Sosa each added a three.
Eastern dominated the second half, outscoring Penn State 49-24, which included a 28-8 margin in the fourth quarter. The Eagles' lead never dipped below 17 points in the final two quarters. For the contest, the Eagles shot 37-of-70 from the floor and eight-of-20 (40 percent) from the arc. Conversely, Eastern held the Lions to just 17-of-58 shooting (29.3 percent) and two-of-11 (18.2 percent) from distance.
The Eagles (1-5) will be back home at the NEST on Saturday evening for a 6:00 pm matchup against Harcum College.
