ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Six Eastern players scored in double figures as Eastern University Men's Basketball (2-2) rolled to a 117-71 home win over the Penn State Schuylkill Lions (1-6).
Jaron Fairweather and
Zubair Lee each posted double-doubles in the first half, and
Davin Hernandez scored a game-high 18 points.
Coming into the game off a pair of tough losses, the Eagles imposed their will at the defensive end of the floor and used a 31-to-8 run over an eight minute stretch to build a 35-12 advantage. The lead grew to 26 points on a.
Nick Mate 3-pointer a few minutes later and expanded to 58-27 as Hernandez hit a three and a lay-up to cap a 7-to-0 Eastern run late. The Lions scored the last basket of the half to pull within 30.
At intermission, Lee had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Fairweather had 12 points and 12 rebounds to go with five steals, two assists, and a block. Hernandez was 4-of-5 from deep and had 14 points at half. Lee and Elway Morris each had two blocked shots at halftime and the Eagles had eight steals and a commanding 34-21 edge on the offensive glass. Lee had six offensive boards.
The Eastern lead hit 50 when
DaRon Sherman hit a pair of free throws with 10:04 left for a 98-47 advantage. Sherman finished with eight points and five rebounds in 14 minutes played, and fellow first-year guard
Dominic Sarigumba had seven points, five assist, three steals, and two blocked shots in 13 minutes.
Thirteen Eastern players scored and fourteen players grabbed at least one rebound in the winning effort. Hernandez and
Olise Onyeka contributed double-digit scoring off the bench. Onyeka scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds.
"It was good to see the young guys get some extended minutes," Head Coach
Dan Pruessner said after the game. "I thought we did a really good job contesting everything early on and I love that we had 27 assists and 65 rebounds. Jaron was very committed on the defensive glass int he first half and that made a difference."
Led by Lee with three, the Eagles blocked 13 shots. Fairweather finished with 13 points, 14 rebounds, six steals, four assists, and a block. He took six shots. The Eagles had 17 total steals.
Mate and Hernandez each hit four 3-pointers.
Though no-one in the gym knew it at the time, when
Roland Majors threw down a dunk in transition in the final minute to cap the scoring for the day, the Eagles set a new high-water mark for points scored in a game. The previous record of 116 was set at Rowan in 2016.
The Eagles are off for Thanksgiving and will play at Cabrini next Wednesday in what will be the final game in that rivalry. Cabrini holds a commanding edge in a the lifetime series, but the Eagles have won the last four contests between the two programs. In the program's final season, the young Cavaliers have been very competitive with some very strong programs but are still looking for their first win. Cabrini hosts the University of Scranton in a get-away day match tomorrow.
