ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Down a goal at halftime, Eastern University Men's Soccer created several good chances to score in the early moments of the second half. The Eagles (3-5-3, 0-2) could not find the equalizer and the visiting Alvernia University Golden Wolves knocked in a 70th minute penalty kick goal to thwart any further comeback opportunities.
Alvernia (6-5, 2-0) had more of the play early, but the Eagles did find moments where they looked dangerous in transition. The Eastern defense turned away several restart chances for the first half hour before the visitors broke through with a goal in the 34th minute. With high pressure on a wet surface, the visitors forced a turnover deep in Eastern territory and Gabe Wunderlich converted from close range.
The Eagles came out of the locker room with their best period of sustained pressure.
Ethan Pfau had a shot saved in the 50th minute, and the Eagles looked to have a great opportunity when the no Alvernia defender cleared the resulting corner and the ball slipped through the box. Manny Park had. Shot turned away and
Jacob Morales delivered a dangerous cross from the right side that also looked promising.
Ty Bleiler made a pair of strong saves at the other end it seemed that the game would fall to the team that scored the second goal.
The Golden Wolves finally found the decisive second goal after they corralled a short Eastern clear and pushed it into the box. Ryan Cogill, their leading scorer found an isolated match-up and pushed the ball toward goal and drew a penalty kick. Bleiler read the kick but could not keep it out of the net.
Down 2-0, the Eagles pressed to create chances but were not able to solve Alvernia's back row.
The Eagles will face No. 1 Messiah on Friday at 3 pm. The unbeaten Falcons beat Widener, 2-0, today.
