Women's Soccer Wins at Albright to Close Regular Season

READING, Pa. - In its final tune-up before the playoffs begin, Eastern Women's Soccer ended the regular season with a 2-1 triumph over the Albright College Lions on Saturday evening at Gene L. Shirk Stadium. Seniors Sydney Koncsol and Brynn Rathsam each recorded a second half tally, and sophomore Nicole Eveland notched the first two assist game of her collegiate career.

The Eagles' offense put pressure on the Albright defense throughout the entire match, firing off 20 total shots, 10 of which were on frame. The Lions (4-11-2, 0-6-1) finished with 12 shots, but only three were on target. First-year goalkeeper Faith Leake earned her third conference win with two saves in the victory. For the season, Leake made 52 saves, all in conference play, recorded two shutouts, and conceded just eight goals in seven matches.

The Eagles and Lions combined for 16 shots in the first half, but none found the back of the net. However, Eastern wasted no time in the second half, scoring both goals in the first 15 minutes of the period. In the 50th minute, sophomore midfielder Emma Bennett, after fluidly moving around two Albright defenders, found Eveland on the near side of the pitch. Eveland crossed the goal to a streaking Koncsol, and the York native tucked it into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, after another strong pass, this time from Kayla Bardonner, Eveland dropped the ball back to Rathsam, and the Lancaster native curled a shot into the upper left corner of the net to double Eastern's lead. Albright got back to within one in the 66th minute on a penalty kick goal from Mackenzie Sowers, but the Eagles held down the stretch to secure the victory.

"I am extremely proud of the ladies and what they've accomplished this season," Eastern Head Coach Jess Shanahan said. "Now, we are preparing and looking forward to our game on Tuesday."

For the first time since joining the MAC Commonwealth, Eastern will take part in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament this upcoming week. The Eagles (4-6-6, 3-2-2) will travel to Grantham on Tuesday to take on No. 1 seed Messiah at 7:00 pm in the opening round.
