YORK, Pa. - Eastern Women's Soccer battled valiantly against a strong York squad on Tuesday night, but a late goal proved costly in a 2-1 loss.
Morgan Crake scored her second goal off the season in the 80th minute, and
Faith Leake put together another brilliant performance in goal for the Eagles.
The Spartans (10-5, 4-0) dominated in shots and possession throughout the contest. York outshot Eastern. 28-8, including a 15-5 edge in shots on target. Despite a steady barrage of chances, Leake was tremendous against one of the top teams in conference. The first-year keeper from Philadelphia tied her career-high with 13 saves, which she set on Saturday against Messiah. Much like against the Falcons, Leake made several brilliant stops on some strong York chances, and kept the Eagles in the contest for all 90 minutes.
York opened the scoring in the 20th minute off a corner kick from Meg Kalthof. The ball curled from the far side and just evaded the reach of Leake. The Spartans held that advantage heading into the halftime break.
The Eagles continued to battle throughout the second half, and their efforts were finally rewarded in the 80th minute. Off a York throw, the Eagles gained possession and moved the ball well through the midfield. Senior forward
Madelyn Mullen dribbled through several Spartan defenders and found a streaking Crake in the box. The first-year forward did the rest, punching the ball into the upper right corner of the net to tie the contest at 1-1. It was the third assist for Mullen, which ties her with
Ashlynn Keys for the team lead.
However, the Spartans answered in the 87th minute on another outstanding Kalthof goal. Off a great one-touch pass, Kalthof dribbled left, found a slight gap in the Eastern defense, and curled a left-footed shot into the top corner of the net to give the Spartans a 2-1 win.
The Eagles (2-6-5) return to Olson Field on Saturday for another MAC Commonwealth showdown against Stevenson. The contest is set to begin at 12 noon.
