ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Volleyball dropped a tough four-set decision to the visiting Elizabethtown College Blue Jays.
Justin Flor led the Eastern attack with 14 kills and six aces.
After dropping a 26-24 decision in a first set in which the only lead over two points was an 8-5 edge for Eastern in the early going, the Eagles rallied to win the second set 25-20.
Chris Miller had three aces and Flor added two to help the Eagles build an 8-3 lead early. Though the Blue Jays tied the score at 10-10, Eastern put together a 5-to-1 run to grab control. Though they only had eight kills in the set, the Eagles limited errors and leveled the match at 1-1.
The Blue Jays registered five blocks in the third set and held Eastern to a zero hitting percentage. Elizabethtown led 18-10, but the Eagles showed good resilience and battled back and pulled to within three points at 19-16.
Andres Suarez Batista but the guests on their heels with aggressive serving to spark the run. The Blue Jays gained a little separation to lead 22-17, but again the Eagles battled back with three points with
Max Bagileo at the service line.
Jeremiah Pha put down the final kill to close the gap to 22-21.
A big block on the next point gave Elizabethtown the margin they needed, and the Blue Jays closed out the set 25-22.
A five-point run for the visitors early in the fourth was the difference in a 25-20 final set. The Blue Jays used the run to build a 15-8 lead, and though the Eagles again closed the gap, they were never able to score enough points on serve to to pull within two. Suarez Batista had four of his ten kills in the fourth set.
Max Bushing had 12 digs and Miller finished with 10 digs and 35 assists. Steve Swain had 13 kills to lead Elizabethtown.
The Eagles (2-3) return to action next Tuesday to play at the University of Valley Forge.
