Women's Hoops Falls in Final Non-Conference Tilt

ST. DAVIDS, Pa - At the NEST on Wednesday evening, Eastern Women's Basketball (3-13) dropped its final non-conference contest of the season to Salisbury, 67-51. The visiting Sea Gulls shot a blistering 64 percent in the first two quarters to build a double-digit advantage they would not relinquish.

Wynter Bess opened the scoring on Eastern's first possession, but the Sea Gulls (7-14) answered with eight straight points, which included a pair of three pointers, to take an 8-2 lead. A Bess three-pointer and a Jakaylah Holland jumper trimmed the lead to 8-7, but a triple from Salisbury's Tori Rumbaugh pushed the Sea Gull advantage back to four. Another Holland field goal made it 11-9, but the Sea Gulls ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to take an 18-9 lead into the second quarter.

Jeriyah Johnson scored on Eastern's first possession off a turnover, making it an 18-11 Salisbury lead. However, the Sea Gulls quickly built their lead back up to double digits, using a 13-1 surge to increase its seven-point advantage to 19. In all, the Seagulls knocked down 14 of their 22 field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes to take a 36-18 advantage into the halftime break.

Salisbury continued to execute its offense to perfection, leading between 16 and 21 points in the third quarter. The Eagles battled valiantly in the fourth, chipping away to make it an 11-point contest with under two minutes to play. However, the Sea Gulls hit eight free throws in the final minute to secure the 16-point triumph.

It was another tough night of offense for Eastern. The Eagles shot just 19-of-50 from the field (38 percent) and four-of-12 from beyond the arc (33.3 percent). Additionally, the Eagles turned the ball over 23 times, which led to 30 Salisbury points.

"Too many missed shots and too many turnovers," Eastern Head Coach Eric Houston said. "We were able to get some things going with pressure in the second half and worked hard to put together a run in the fourth quarter, but we have to execute better throughout the game. We will be ready for Saturday."

Bess and Taryn Woodson each led the Eagles with 14 points and six rebounds, while Holland scored eight points to go along with four boards. Trinity Upton played a tremendous defensive game with seven points, eight steals, and five rebounds.

Eastern will return to conference action this coming Saturday as they host Hood at the NEST. The contest is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
