Women's Soccer Falls to Goucher

BALTIMORE, Md. - In a back-and-forth battle on Saturday, a late goal was the difference as Eastern Women's Soccer fell to 0-2 on the young season with a 1-0 loss to Goucher. After an even first half, the Gophers recorded a 9-5 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes and scored the game-winner in the 86th minute.

Eastern started the match strong with four of their six first-half shots coming in the first 10 minutes. A header from Sarah Wilk on a Lindsay Kline corner kick went high, before another chance from first-year midfielder Emma Bennett went wide. Leah Mowery's following shot was blocked, before Wilk's second shot of the period was saved. Sydney Koncsol had another strong chance at the end of the first half, but Goucher's keeper Marissa Spacht made the save to keep the contest scoreless.

The Gophers began to turn up the pressure in the second half with five shots in the first 13 minutes of the second half. Goucher recorded three more chances in the following 20 minutes, before Arianna Carman notched the game winner. The Eagles had a few more opportunities late but were unable to find the equalizer.

"It was a tough result because the girls played well and were relentless for the full 90 minutes," Eastern Head Coach Jess Shanahan said. "They won the individual battles all over the field and truly deserved the positive result. We just did not capitalize on the chances we created in the final third. We are keeping our heads up and getting back to work."

Wilk and Mowery each finished with two shots apiece, while Bennett and Madelyn Mullen each added one. First-year goalkeeper Brooke Moskey played another solid match in net for the Eagles with seven saves.

Eastern will be back in St. Davids on Wednesday where they will travel across Eagle Road to take on rival Cabrini. The contest is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
