Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Sweeps Day Two at Home

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Volleyball swept through a pair of home matches Saturday to improve to 5-2 on the young season. The Eagles (5-2)  beat an unbeaten Elizabethtown College (5-1) team in the morning and then hit .337 to sweep McDaniel (1-4)  in the final match of a four-game day. Bridgette Kelly had seven kills, three blocks, and an ace against McDaniel and Hannah Pringle led the Eastern attack with 13 kills and a pair of blocks against Elizabethtown.

For the Eagles, the morning match posted the dual challenge of a talented and confident Elizabethtown team and a quick turnaround from playing the late game on Friday.

The two teams traded points early and the Eagles clung to a 20-19 lead before Pringle earned a kill and Elle Jiron-Bujanda served for a pair of points to build a 23-20 edge. The Blue Jays earned a side-out, but the Eagles found a quick response with a kill from Kaylyn Zeigler. Natalie Saxton and Logan Martin combined for a block to win the set 25-20. The Eagles earned the win despite hitting just .102 in the frame.

The Eastern offense hit on all cylinders in the second set. Martin had six kills and Pringle and Zeigler each had four as the Eagles hit .500 with 17 kills. Jiron-Bujanda dished out 16 of her 39 assists in the second set. Though the Eastern offense was rolling, the Blue Jays kept things close until Grace Casagrande served three points in a row to put the home side up 22-16. Eastern won the set 25-18.

With two sets won, the Eagles started the third set with an 8-2 lead. The Blue Jays fought back and leveled the score at 14 before Trinity Gruber started an 8-to-1 run with a service ace. The Eagles closed out the match at 25-19 with kills from Martin and Pringle. Martin had 12 kills and Zeigler added eight. Kelly had seven kills, an ace and a block.

"We put together our best overall effort of the year," Head Coach Mark Birtwistle said of his teams contest against Elizabethtown. "Elle did a really good job getting the balls to our hitters. We had to play well to beat beat them and I think we did a lot of things right."

Jiron Bujanda had 12 digs, three kills, two aces, and a block to go with her 39 assists. Casagrande 18 digs.

In the nightcap against McDaniel, the Eagles hit .500 in the final two sets to pull away. The Green Terror lost a five-set match to Gallaudet in the third match of the day, and the Eagles did not give the McDaniel team a chance to find a rhythm.

Behind a balanced attack, Eastern built a 21-13 lead before the Green Terror closed the gap with a 7-to-1 run. The Eagles won the set 25-21.

Viviana Fragoso put McDaniel on the defensive from the start of the section set. The first year defensive specialist served the Eagles to a 7-0 lead. Eastern rode that momentum to a 25-6 second-set win. The Eagles continued that run with a 25-5 win in the third set. Seven Eastern players had three or more kills in the match. Jaron Bujanda again led the offense with 30 assists and four blocks.

The Eagles start their MAC Commonwealth slate with a match at Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday.
