Softball Sweeps Alvernia for Fifth Straight Win

READING, Pa. - On Saturday afternoon, Eastern Softball (18-9, 8-6) wrapped up an excellent week of play with a doubleheader sweep of Alvernia. The Eagles recorded 16 hits in a 12-6 victory in game one, before a three-hit, four-RBI performance from Tori Hook in game two lifted Eastern to a 6-3 triumph. With the wins, Eastern improved its record to 9-1 away from St. Davids this season.

Kelci Cost led the offense in game one with four hits in five at-bats, while Jania Long went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Kacie Noonan recorded two hits and drove in three runs, while Hook and Susana Perez each finished with two hits and combined for three RBIs. Sami Britton added a hit, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Valentina Marino and Elena Iannuzzelli recorded one hit apiece. Long (8-6) earned her eighth win of the season in the circle with four strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed.

The Eagles led from the onset in the opener, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI single from Cost and an RBI double from Hook. Britton added to the Eagles lead in the third with a two-run double.

Alvernia was able to get a run back in the fourth, but Eastern's offense exploded for six runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Long scored Cost on an RBI double to left field to begin the rally, before Noonan drew a base-loaded walk. Marino singled home Britton and another run scored on a Alvernia fielding error, before Perez capped off the scoring with a two-run double. Noonan added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on Eastern's fifth double of the contest to secure the game one victory.

In game two, Hook shined at the dish. The first-year infielder gave the Eagles another early advantage with a two-run double to left-center, before hitting another two-run double in the third to give Eastern a 4-0 lead.

Eastern scored another two runs in the fifth to increase their advantage to 6-1. Britton scored on an Alvernia fielding error, before an RBI triple from Noonan put the Eagles up by five. The Golden Wolves scored single runs in the fifth and seventh frames, but would not get any closer than three runs the rest of the way.

Hook finished with three hits in four at-bats, all three of which were for extra bases, while Iannuzzelli went a perfect 3-for-3 in the game two triumph. Perez recorded two doubles and scored two runs, while Cost also went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Victoria Perez (6-1) picked up her sixth win of the season in the circle, scattering five hits over four innings with three strikeouts and only one unearned run. Long recorded her second save, striking out two in the final three frames.

Eastern will wrap up its regular season slate this coming Saturday at home against Lebanon Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
