FREDERICK, Md.– Eastern University Softball rallied to win the second game and earn an important MAC Commonwealth doubleheader sweep at Hood College. The Eagles won the opener 7-3 and came back from an 0-2 deficit to claim the nightcap, 5-3.
Tori Hook had five hits and six RBIs in the two wins.
Hook was the story in the opener. The first-year corner infielder ripped a three-run shot to center to put the Eagles up 5-0 before the Blazers came off the field in the first. With the big lead,
Jania Long pitched to contact. Hood scored a single run in the second and two more in the third. Hook delivered two RBIs in the fifth for the final margin. She hit a bases-loaded double to left field to drive in
Sami Britton and
Kelci Cost.
Seven Eagles had hits in the opener. Cost reached base three times and scored twice.
In the nightcap, the Blazers scored a pair of runs on a first-inning home run, but
Victoria Perez was able to right the ship and hold the Blazers to only a pair of singles through the next three-plus innings.
Eastern tied the game on a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Hook scored on a
Meghan Johnson sacrifice fly and
Kacie Noonan came home on an infield single by
Elena Iannuzzelli.
The Eagles clawed ahead with another run in the top of the fifth. Hook drove in Cost with a sacrifice fly to center field. After Britton came on to pitch, they manufactured two more runs in the top of the sixth. Johnson led off with a single to center and was replaced by
Sophie Rollins on the base path. Iannuzzelli bunted to move her over and beat the throw to get the rally going.
Chloe Rupe moved both runners along with a sacrifice bunt. Rollins and Iannuzzelli scored on ground balls from
Susana Perez and Cost.
Hood grabbed a run back with a home run in the sixth, but Haleigh Krichten pitched the final five outs to earn the save.
Eastern (11-7, 2-4) will play at Haverford College this Thursday before returning to MAC Commonwealth play with a doubleheader against York next Saturday.
