ALLENTOWN, Pa. - In an offensive slugfest on Wednesday in the Lehigh Valley, Eastern Softball (7-5, 0-2 MACC) emerged victorious, recording 17 hits in a 15-9 triumph over Cedar Crest College. Ten Eagles recorded at least one hit, while seven recorded at least one RBI.
Jania Long put together a dominant performance at the dish, finishing 2-for-2 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to put the game away for the Eagles. Susana Perez picked up where she left off against Stevenson, finishing 4-for-5 with a home run, four runs scored, and three RBIs, while Meghan Johnson collected a pair of hits, a double, and three RBIs. Sami Britton added two hits and a double in the Eagles' victory.
Long (3-4) also picked up the win in the circle, striking out three in five innings of work, while Britton pitched efficiently in relief, giving up just two hits in the final two frames.
Long got the scoring started for the Eagles in the top of the first, singling home Perez for the early 1-0 advantage, but Cedar Crest (4-5) responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. The Eagles tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the second on a Cedar Crest fielding error and an Elena Iannuzzelli RBI single, before tying the contest again at 5-5 in the third on back-to-back RBI base hits from Johnson and Chloe Rupe.
Eastern took the lead for good in the fourth. Johnson started the scoring with a two-run double, plating Perez and Noonan, before Kelci Cost followed with an RBI double of her own, giving the Eagles an 8-5 lead. The Eagles increased their advantage to six with three more runs in the fifth. Kacie Noonan plated Britton with a single to right-center and Perez followed with a two-run shot to left-center field.
Cedar Crest continued to battle, scoring two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to trim the Eastern advantage to 11-9. That was as close as the Falcons would get, as a Perez RBI single and Long's three-run blast in the game's final inning helped the Eagles secure the victory.
The Eagles will be back home on Saturday for a pair of contests against MAC Commonwealth foe Messiah. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
