Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Wins at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa.– Eastern Unviersity Men's Lacrosse jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening six minutes and never looked back on the way to a 15-10 win at Arcadia University. Christopher Fanelli scored three of his five goals in the opening burst. The rookie attack also added assist in the win.

Injuries in the midfield led to a line-up change that resulted in Christopher joining his older brother Nicholas in the starting attack group. The change paid dividends early as the two brothers were involved in each of the seven first-quarter goals, and the Eagles held a commanding 7-2 lead at the first break.

After the Eagles had two shots saved and another go wide, Jake Gottschalk set up Christopher on the crease for a 1-0 lead. The Knights (2-3) tied the score on the ensuing faceoff. The Eagles made a defensive stand to get the ball back and Nicholas Fanelli set up Connor Killion to put the Eagles up for good.

The Killion goal was the first of three in a 45 second span for the Eagles. Nicholas found Christopher for the next two tallies. Arcadia grabbed a goal back before Christopher found Nick Litzenberger for his first of two on the day. Nicholas Fanelli scored from Killion for a 6-2 lead with two minutes left, before the Fanelli-Fanelli connection reappeared with Christopher on the finishing end with 22 seconds left in the quarter.

Connor Bachman scored Eastern's two second-quarter goals, and the Eagles led 9-3 and had possession with just over a minute left in the first half. The Knights forced a turnover and scored twice int he final 14 seconds. Other than the final minutes of the game, it was the only time the Knights were able to score back-to-back goals.

Ethan Myers made six of his twelve saves in the third quarter. The sophomore goalie also picked up an assist on a Nicholas Fanelli goal early in the period. With Arcadia looking to force the issue with a ten-man ride, Myers worked himself free and led Fanelli to goal with a perfect 60-yard pass. Myers scored a goal last year against a ten-man ride but picked up his first career assist today.

Killion and Litzenberger added goals in the third to build a seven-goal lead with a minute to play in the third period. The Eagles had an answer for every Knight goal until the final minute. Avery Porter, who had moved into the midfield from the attack, scored Eastern's final goal by splitting a pair of poles late in the shot clock.

Killion joined the Fanelli brothers with a six-point day.

Though the Eagles only won 11-of-27 faceoffs, they were able to win the ground ball battle and create good chances with a perfect clearing day. Kyran Baker led the Eastern defensive group with five ground balls.

"This was a good team win," Head Coach Kevin Wallace said after the game. "It is hard to win games against good teams. We made plays on offense, defense, and in transition and for the most part limited some of the big mistakes that have cost us. Christopher finished well and having Avery in the midfield opened up some match-ups for some other guys to help create chances."

The Eagles (1-4) will have just one day to prepare for former MAC Freedom rival DeSales. Eastern will play the Bulldogs in Center Valley on Wednesday night.
