CAMDEN, N.J.– Eastern University Men's Tennis started the 2022 season with a 9-0 win against a short-handed squad from Rutgers-Camden. With the Scarlet-Raptors down two starters, the Eagles (1-0) started the match up 3-0. When Eastern swept the two doubles matches at the top of the order, the victory was secured and the teams played out the four singles matches for individual records.
Bryan Levi partnered with
Darren Lopez to win the first doubles spot, 8-4, and secure the win. Levi won 8-2 at the top singles spot, and Lopez did not drop a game in winning his pro-set at fourth singles.
Cole Patti and
Nick Wool cruised to an 8-0 win at second doubles. Patti won 8-1 at second singles, and Wool earned an 8-0 win at the third spot. Jacob Devage and
Jacob Craig earned the walkover win at third doubles. Devage was credited with a win at the fifth spot, and
Ryan Kratz earned the win at sixth singles.
With the win, the veteran group starts their spring season under Interim Head Coach
Eric Houston. Houston spoke before the match about how balanced the group is and how they have worked together through the offseason.
"They are a good group," he said. "They get along well and build each other up. We will want to continue to get more experience with our doubles partnerships, but I think we will have guys step up at all spots in the line-up."
The Eagles will watch from inside as the weekend's bad weather rolls through and are back in action at Gwynedd Mercy University next Saturday.
