Women's Basketball's Season Ends with Loss at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - In its MAC Commonwealth Quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday evening, second-quarter offensive struggles proved to be the difference, as Eastern Women's Basketball ended its season with a 73-58 loss to Widener. After a tightly-contested first quarter, the Pride outscored the Eagles 23-11 in the second to take a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.

Ashya Gaddy played her best game in an Eagle uniform, scoring a season-high 25 points on 10-of-21 shooting and five-of-six from the free-throw line, to go along with five rebounds. Jaelyn Harris scored 11 points in her final collegiate game, while Taryn Woodson ended her strong first-year campaign with 10 points and nine boards.

Gaddy opened the scoring on the Eagles' first possession, and buckets on subsequent trips down the floor from Gaddy, Harris, and Woodson put Eastern ahead 8-5 at the 7:12 mark. However, the Pride tied the contest at 10-10 less than two minutes later and back-to-back triples gave them a 16-10 advantage with 4:04 remaining on the clock. Widener increased its lead to 21-14, before Gaddy hit a pair of free throws to make it 21-16 heading into the second quarter.

The Pride took control of the contest in the second quarter, knocking down seven field goals and outscoring the Eagles 12-4 in the final 3:55 of the opening half. Additionally, the Widener defense locked down the Eastern offense, holding the Eagles to four-of-12 shooting (33.3 percent) in the stanza while forcing nine turnovers.

After Widener's late first-half run, the Eagles were unable to make up the double-digit deficit, never getting closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Harris ends her career as the Eagles' leader in career three-pointers made with 185, along with 930 points, 222 rebounds, 100 assists, and 73 assists. Brynn Schmidt also played her final game in an Eastern uniform, finishing with career totals of 281 points, 190 rebounds, 92 assists, and 71 steals.
