Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Early Surge Leads Women's Basketball to Win over LVC on Senior Night

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - In its final home game of the season, Eastern Women's Basketball (8-16, 5-10 MACC), behind a lights-out opening quarter and a tremendous performance from senior guard Jaelyn Harris, led wire-to-wire in a 65-54 victory over the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen on Senior Night. In her final home game, Harris finished the contest with 19 points on six-of-10 shooting, three-of-seven from beyond the arc, and four-of-four from the line, along with two steals, in the victory.

"Jae came out hot," Eastern Head Coach Eric Houston said. "She played with great intensity on both ends of the floor."

With the win, the Eagles are locked in as the seventh seed in next week's MAC Commonwealth Tournament.

After a pregame celebration to recognize the accomplishments of Harris and fellow senior guard Brynn Schmidt, the Eagles came out firing in the opening frame, shooting a scorching 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the floor. Taryn Woodson, who recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds, opened the scoring with a layup, before a bucket from Ashya Gaddy and back-to-back triples from Harris and Camila Sosa put Eastern up 12-3 at the 5:58 mark. Harris and Gaddy combined for eight more points in the stanza, giving the Eagles a 22-9 lead at the first quarter break.

The Dutchmen (11-14, 6-10 MACC) battled back in the second quarter, cutting the Eastern advantage to 25-19, but the Eagles, behind baskets from Gaddy, Woodson, and Schmidt, put Eastern ahead 34-23. Lebanon Valley scored the final four points of the first half, cutting the Eagles' lead to 34-27 at the halftime break.

An early surge by the Dutchmen in the opening 35 seconds of the second half trimmed the Eastern advantage down to four, but the Eagles answered with seven straight points, including another three-pointer from Sosa, to go back up by 11 at 41-30. The Eagles led by between seven and 11 points the rest of the third quarter, taking a 48-39 advantage into the final frame.

Lebanon Valley made a strong push in the fourth quarter, hitting a three to make it a 57-54 Eastern lead with 2:58 to play. However, the Eagles scored the final eight points of the contest. Harris and Gaddy combined to hit five of Eastern's last six free throws to secure the win.

Gaddy finished the game with 14 points, while Sosa added six. Schmidt collected four points, three rebounds, and four assists. As a team, the Eagles finished 23-of-55 from the field (41.8 percent), five-of-14 from beyond the arc (35.7 percent), and 14-of-16 from the charity stripe (87.5 percent).

"Brynn did a lot of great things that don't show up on the stat sheet," Houston said. "Her hard work defensively caused some issues with their offense."

Eastern will conclude the regular season on Saturday, traveling to York to take on the Spartans. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

"Definitely was a great team win," Houston concluded. "We have a big one on Saturday that we need to be ready for."
