GETTYSBURG, Pa.– After trailing by as many as 15 points in the first half, Eastern University Men's Basketball rode a 15-point run to start the second half and earn a 65-58 win over the Wilkes University Colonels (2-1).
Jaron Fairweather scored the final seven points of the game to help the Eagles to remain unbeaten.
With Wilkes using size to pack the lane, the Eagles shot just 33 percent from the floor in the first half. At the other end, the Colonels hit 55 percent from the floor and grabbed nine offensive rebounds on the way to a 37-24 lead.
With some time to regroup, Eagles scored on eight of their first nine possessions to start the second half and built their lead to 50-44 on a
Jairus Carroll lay-up at the midpoint of the second half. As well as they started the second half, the Eagles never stretched their lead to three-possessions. With six minutes to go, Wilkes cut the Eastern lead to 52-49, but
Nick Mate hit a 3-pointer from the wing to stretch the lead back to six.
The Colonels kept clawing back and used the foul line and a clutch 3-pointer from Drake Marshall to stay in the game. They tied the score at 58 with 90 seconds to play.
Fairweather, who scored seven points in overtime in Esatern's win at Salisbury, was again ready to close.
Kaeshawn Ward got into the Wilkes defense and pitched a pass to the corner. Fairweather connected for a 3-pointer to put the game on an odd number.
The Eastern defense then forced a pair of contested 3-pointers at the other end before
Zubair Lee grabbed the rebound and found Fairweather. The senior guard hit both ends of the 1-and-1 to push the Eastern lead to five.
Sam Gallardo broke up the next Colonel possession with a steal and threw it ahead to Fairweather who made two more foul shots to seal the game.
After the intermission, the Eagles held Wilkes to 7-of-24 shooting (29 percent) and forced 16 turnovers.
Fairweather and Gallardo finished the game with 13 points. Ward and Lee each had nine.
"We needed to be a lot more patient offensively against them," Head Coach
Dan Pruessner said after the game. "It was like we were trying to create a basket with every pass rather than just moving the ball. We want to be aggressive, but we really forced some things in the first half. We need to fix the way we started this weekend."
"We really did a great job defensively in the second half," he continued. "It was important for us to do better on the glass. We were better in the second half, but there is room for improvement there as well."
Gallardo was named to the All-Tournament team and Fairweather was named Tournament MVP. He had four assists and three steals today.
The Eagles have a huge week of home games coming up. They will host Eagle Road-rival Cabrini on Tuesday and then welcome Lancaster Bible on Thursday and Haverford College on Saturday.
