FREDERICK, Md.– Eastern University Women's Volleyball completed its unbeaten run through the MAC Commonwealth with a 3-0 win at Hood College. After surviving heavy traffic that delayed the start of the match, the Eagles hit an efficient .228 as a team on the way to decisive wins in all three sets.
Hannah Pringle led the Eastern attack with 12 kills in two sets. The rookie outside hitter was one of three Eastern players to hit .429 for the match.
Bridgette Kelly had three kills on seven swings in the one set she played, and
Grace Nealy finished with seven kills on 14 swings.
The Eagles (19-5, 8-0) were successful on 11-of-15 sideout chances on the way to a 25-14 win in the opener. Pringle was 7-of-10 in the set.
Lexi Couch and
Logan Martin each had a pair of first-set blocks and
Grace Casagrande had seven digs. Kelly had three kills early before exiting the match with the Eagles up 20-9.
Seven different Eastern hitters recorded kills as the Eagles won the second set 25-17. The Eastern passers were perfect on 15 attempts and Casagrande picked up another six digs. The junior libero finished the match with 22 dig and is leading the MAC Commonwealth with 4.95 digs per set.
The Eagles matched the 25-17 scoreline in the third set. The Eagles pulled away on a nine-point run with
Trinity Gruber at the service line. Nealy had a pair of blocks and a pair of kills in the run which saw the Eagles go up 22-11.
Kaylyn Zeigler ended the match with an ace.
"I am proud of this team to finish the end of the conference season where we wanted to be," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said after the match. "It's fun to see this young group putting some things together late in the season.
We know the postseason is a whole new challenge, but we'll be excited to get it going. "
The Eagles secured the top seed in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament with a win over Stevenson on Tuesday, and they locked up the regular-season title with the win today. The Eagles have a pair of challenging home tests on Saturday to wrap up the regular season. Eastern will host Cortland at 10 on Saturday and then will play Eagle Road rival Cabrini at 2 pm. As the top seed, the Eagles will host the winner of Monday's play-in game between Messiah and Lebanon Valley next Wednesday. Stevenson wrapped up the second seed with a win over Messiah tonight and will host Widener next Wednesday.
