Volleyball Settles for Split in Baltimore

BALTIMORE– Eastern University Women's Volleyball settled for a split in a pair of matches against Centennial Conference opponents at Johns Hopkins University on Saturday. The Eagles swept the Muhlenberg College Mules in the 2:00 pm match but could not carry that momentum through and fell to the host Blue Jays in the final match of the day.

Bridgette Kelly had eight kills on 17 swings to pace ten different Eastern players with kills in the win over Muhlenberg. Kelly added five blocks and a pair of service aces. Peyton Wheeler and Rachel Curran hit on the outside for the final two sets. Wheeler had five kills in the match.

The Eagles controlled the action in the opening two sets against Muhlenberg (11-10). The Eagles grabbed the lead for good in the opening with a seven-point run with Kaylyn Zeigler at the service line. After the Mules closed the gap to 15-11 with a four-point run, Viviana Fragoso served for six points to take the Eagles to 22-11. The Eagles closed out the opening set 25-16 with three side-out points.

The Eagles raced to a 13-2 lead in the second set and were up 21-5 before winning 25-11. Natalie Saxton closed out the set with a kill.

Eastern trailed 17-14 in the third before Grace Casagrande served six-straight points to put the Eagles up 21-17. The junior liber had a pair of aces in the run. The Eagles closed out the match with a 25-20 win. Casagrande finished with a match-high 14 digs.

Eastern (13-5) led 14-13 in the opening set against Hopkins, but the the Blue Jays (14-7) scored 12 of the final 13 points in the opening set to grab the lead in the match. Hannah Pringle had five kills in the opening set, but the Eagles hit just .100 as a team.

The Eagles built a 16-14 lead in the second set, but Hopkins again flipped that edge with two small runs to build a 21-18 lead. From there, the Eagles gained ground, but not quickly enough to extend the set. The Blue Jays won 25-22.

The two sides traded points to 14-14 in the third, but again, the hosts pulled away to win 25-20.

Pringle led the Eagles with 10 kills. Wheeler added five kills in two sets.

The Eagles will look to secure a spot in the MAC Commonwealth when they host the Widener University Pride on Wednesday at 7:00.

They will host Susquehanna in another important regional match on Friday at 7:00 Pm.
