Volleyball Takes Two at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md.– Eastern University Volleyball grabbed a pair of quality wins at Salisbury University. The Eagles (4-0) beat the host Sea Gulls in four sets and topped McDaniel College in three sets. Logan Martin finished the day with 26 kills, and Elle Jiron-Bujanda had 70 assists, 11 aces, and 17 digs.

The Eagles were able to side out at 84 percent in the opening set and pulled away to a 25-19 win. Martin put down seven kills and Jiron-Bujanda dished out 16 assists as the Eagles hit a very solid .297 in the first. In the second, Salisbury broke open a 20-20 tie with four-straight points and earned a 25-23 win. The Eagles hit just .146 in the set and were only successful on 11-of-25 side-out chances.

After trading points early in the third, the Eagles began to pull away after consecutive kills from Jailene Lugo midway through the set. The Eagles built a five-point lead but the Sea Gulls made things interesting before Bridgette Kelly closed out the set with a kill. The fourth set looked quite a bit like the first with Eastern excelling in serve-receive and hitting a steady .258. The Eagles were successful in 17-of-19 side-out chances to win 25-18.

After a quick turnaround, the Eagles took the court against a rested McDaniel team. The Eagles adjusted to a completely different offense and earned the three set win. After Eastern won the first set 25-17, both teams had several chances to win the second, but neither to could pull away until the Eagles claimed the final two points on errors to earn a 33-31 win. Natalie Saxton and Martin each had four kills in the final set to help the Eagles seal the match.

"This was two solid wins today against two very different teams," Head Coach Mark Birtwistle said. " I am really happy with our team focus and attention to systems. Salisbury is a very well-rounded offense, and we had to play a strong defensive game. Our serving kept us in the match and put a lot of pressure on their side-out. Grace Casagrande and our serve-receive  passed very well, which gave us the opportunity to attack against their big block."

"McDaniel presented a totally different offense," Birtwistle added, "and we responded well. [It is] Tough to play back to back against two quality opponents and stay mentally focused when we were physically tired. I am really proud of that growth in our team over past week or so. We still have areas we can improve on but very pleased with our effort and team energy this weekend."

The Eagles open MAC Commonwealth competition at Alvernia on Wednesday evening.
