ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Volleyball hit .318 as a team on the way to a 3-0 MAC Commonwealth win over the visiting Hood College Blazers.
Logan Martin led the Eagles with 12 kills and fellow first-year
Bridgette Kelly hit .500 with six kills and a pair of blocks on her birthday.
Through the first two sets, the Eagles were impressive in their side-out game. Eastern hit .448 and was successful on 14-of-18 side-out opportunities to claim the first set 25-17. Kelly, Martin and
Jailene Lugo each had four kills in the opening set.
Though the percentages dropped, the Eagles were even more dominant in the second set.
Kelsey Bradshaw served the Eagles to a 10-0 lead early, and they held on to win 25-10. Martin had all five of her kills in the set in the first 12 Eastern points.
The Eagles jumped to a 5-0 lead and never trailed in the third, but a combination of six hitting errors, four serving errors, and a pair of ball-handing errors allowed the guests to be within a point at 23-22. Eastern (17-1, 4-0) earned a side-out on a service error and
Grace Will found a hole in the Hood defense for her first kill of the match. The sophomore again played at the libero spot and finished with a match-best 13 digs.
Natalie Saxton had three kills and a pair of blocks in the third set.
"In the first two sets our side-out efficiency was excellent," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said after the match. "We kept putting pressure on them to defend. Our serving in set two also proved to be the difference as Kelsey lead us out to a 10-0 lead. Bridgette had a very solid effort on her birthday."
The Eagles will look to use two consecutive weekends without matches to recover for some challenging matches on the horizon. They have an important MAC Commonwealth test at Widener next Wednesday.
